AMHERST, Mass. --
Matthew Sheinberg scored four times Wednesday afternoon -- three times in the decisive third quarter, to help rally the 14th-ranked Amherst College men's lacrosse team to a 14-11 victory over 15th-ranked Swarthmore on Pratt Field at Lehrmann Stadium.
Amherst won its third straight and improved to 3-1 overall. The Mammoths will host Colby College Saturday at 1 p.m. The Garnet suffered their first loss of the season, falling to 4-1.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* After allowing the visiting Garnet seven goals in the second quarter, the Mammoths trailed 9-7 at halftime. However, in a stunning turnaround, Amherst goaltender
Mitch Likins and his defensive teammates would allow only two goals for the entirety of the second half.
* The first 5 1/2 minutes of the third quarter was scoreless, but
Bob Gross got things rolling for the Mammoths with 9:35 remaining in the period when he took a pass from
Alex Vlacich and fired a shot past Swarthmore goalie Drew Tyson to bring Amherst within one at 9-8.
* Only 33 seconds later, Amherst had tied the game at 9-all when Sheinberg received a pass from
Steve Crawford II and slipped a shot by Tyson. On the ensuing face-off,
Nicholas Kopp won the face-off, raced down the field and scored for a 10-9 lead. That came just five seconds after Sheinberg's tying goal.
* Following a four-minute period of missed shots, saves and turnovers, Sheinberg scored back-to-back goals 17 seconds apart -- the second coming off a Vlacich assist -- to increase the Mammoths' lead to 12-9.
* The Garnet cut its deficit to 12-11 with 12:18 left in the contest, but the Mammoths' defense put the clamps on for the final 12:18 while the offense produced goals from Vlacich and
Alex Giacobbe, to account for the three-goal win. Neither team would score over the final 7:33 of the game.
