Top-seeded Mammoths upset by Hamilton in NESCAC semifinals, 2-1

AMHERST, Mass.— Two early first-period goals by the fourth-seeded Hamilton College women's hockey team stood up Friday afternoon as the Continentals edged top-seeded Amherst 2-1 at Orr Rink in the NESCAC semifinals.

Hamilton will compete again tomorrow (March 2) at 4 p.m. in the championship game against either Colby or Middlebury. 

The Mammoths fell to 21-3-2 overall and they await word on an-large berth into the NCAA Tournament selection. The selection show is Sunday at 8:30 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS 
  • Continental Claire McGennis skated behind the net to make the pass back to Grace Long. Long looked to Sami Quackenbush, who was stationed by the blue line for the pass, allowing Quackenbush to find the back of the net at 4:21 in the commencing period. 
  • In blue, Abby Smith chased down a wide shot in the Mammoth's zone and slipped the puck back to Quackenbush by the blue line. Quackenbush fired at the net for Lilly Truchon to redirect the puck into the net for a 2-0 score at 6:19 in the opening period. 
  • At 16:22 into the final period, Marie-Eve Marleau carried the puck up the left side of the ice to find Maeve Reynolds off her right for a cross-ice pass. Reynolds controlled the puck and sent it back into the low slot for Marleau, who nearly scored.
  • The Mammoths got on the board in the third period with 2:28 remaining. Alyssa Xu's pass through the crease ignited a frantic scramble in front of the net, where Rylee Glennon slipped the puck past the goaltender's pads.
  • The Mammoths pulled goaltender Natalie Stott with 2:01 remaining in the game and had several shots, some which were blocked and a double saved, but the Contnentals were able to run out the clock. 

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Amherst outshot the Continentals 35-16. 
  • The Mammoths won 38 out of the 56 face-offs, with center Anna Baxter winning 14 of the 19 and Maeve Reynolds winning 12 out of the 15 face-offs she took. 
  • Amherst went 0-2 on power plays, while Hamilton went 0-1. 
  • In the net, Natalie Stott saved 14 out of the 16 shots she faced. 
  • Mac Donovan made 34 stops for the Continentals.
