Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Three third-period goals send #4 Mammoths past Colby, 3-1, on Senior Day

AMHERST, Mass. –  Third period goals from Marie-Eve Marleau, Mary Thompson, and Rylee Glennon sent the fourth-ranked Amherst College women's hockey team to defeat the 11th-ranked Colby College Mules Saturday afternoon. The Mammoths were able to come back from behind after being scored on in the first period and win 3-1, tallying a win on their Senior Day. 

With the win Amherst improved to 16-2-2 and Colby fell to 12-7-1. The Mammoths play again this coming Tuesday, February 6, against Western New England University at Orr Rink for a 7 p.m. puck drop. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Mammoths had their first opportunity at goal with 13:18 left in the first period. Jayna Park got the puck and skated down the ice on a breakaway. The Muels defense was able to catch up and her shot was stopped by Mule goalkeeper Mandy Busky.
  • With 10:58 left the Mules started the first power play of the game. With two diving save from Mammoths goalkeeper Natalie Stott, and a block from Gretchen Dann the Mammoths were successfully able to complete the penalty kill. 
  • With 1:53 left Mary Thompson weaved through the Mules defense taking a shot high right, but Busky slid to grab it. 
  • In the second period, with 10:52 left, Beth Sinson was able to find Meg Rittenhouse in front of the Mammoth goal who shot the puck from close right past Stott scoring the first goal of the game. 
  • Almost a minute later, with 9:45 left, Rylee Glennon and Anna Baxter on a 2v1 breakaway, Baxter took the shot but was stopped by Busky.
  •  With 4:32 left Thompson beat her defender while skating down the left side of the rink. She took a shot high right, shooting just wide of the Mules goal. 
  • The Mammoths had another opportunity with 1:02 left when Ellie DeCarlo skated down the left side of the ice, finding Jayna Park at center ice who took a shot but was stopped by Busky. 
  • In the third period, with 16:14 left, DeCarlo won the puck back form a Colby defender right in front of the Mules goal. She attempted to find Park just to the right of her, but her pass went far. 
  • With 8:54 left, Thompson got the puck off of a rebound. She passed the puck across the Mules goal, finding Marie-Eve Marleau who one-timed the puck past Busky, scoring the equalizer for the Mammoths. 
  • With 6:53 left, Clare O'Connor passed the puck from high right to Marleau who was just left of the Mules goal. She took a shot that deflected off Busky. Thompson was able to find the puck pushing the Mammoths ahead of the Mules 2-1. 
  • With 1:47 left, the Mammoths cemented their lead, when Alyssa Xu split through two Colby defenders, finding Glennon right in front of Colby's goal. Glennon one-timed the puck into the back left of the net making the score 3-1. 

BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Amherst outshot Colby, 38-24.
  • The Mammoths won 33 of the 60 face-offs, with Baxter winning 16.
  • The Mules were whistled for 3 penalties, the Mammoths for 2. 
  • Busky made 35 saves, 14 of which in the third period. Sott made 23 saves, 11 of which in the first period.
