#20 Williams defeats Amherst in NESCAC Semifinal, 57-43

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA -- The top-seeded Williams College Ephs knocked the sixth-seeded Amherst out of the NESCAC Men's Basketball Championship today with a score of 57-43. The game took place at 2pm in the Chandler Gymnasium on Williams College's campus. 

Today's game concludes Amherst's 2023-24 season. The Mammoths end with a 15-11 overall record, including a dominant 11-4 home record. As for Williams, they proceed to tomorrow's final of the NESCAC Championship. The final will also take place in the Chandler Gymnasium.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Ryker Vance and Charlie Randall continued to contribute to the Mammoths' offensive display with 7 and 5 points, respectively, in the first half. Williams, however, made 36% (11-31) of field goals and 27% (4-15) of three-pointers to help them take the upper hand in the game. The first half ended with a 31-21 lead in favor of the home side ranked #20 in the country.

* Amherst were first on the scoresheet with two free throws by Charlie Randall in the first 30 seconds. Williams quickly bounced back and began demonstrating their high confidence with two successive three-pointers by Brandon Roughley and Alex Stoddard.

* The Ephs built on their momentum from the first half in the first five minutes of the second half. Williams capitalized on two Amherst turnovers by Will Scherer and Chris Hammond to extend their lead to 42-25. 

* Despite efforts from Amherst, including a jumper by Hammond, Williams continued to maintain their lead with successful layups by Brandon Roughley.

* Scherer's jumper briefly closed the scoring gap for Amherst to 12 points with 9 minutes remaining, but Williams responded with defensive stops and free throws by Roughley.

* Williams extended their lead further with a 3-pointer by Stoddard, prompting a timeout by Amherst to regroup. The Mammoths did everything they could to recover the deficit, with Martin and Vance stepping in near the end, but Williams' defense remained solid, forcing turnovers and limiting scoring opportunities.

 * Scherer and C.J. Mitchell were the Mammoths' two highest scorers in the second half; they each scored 6 points in a closer second half than the first. Overall, two three pointers, seven field goals, and 10 free throws helped Williams score four more points than Amherst's 22 in the second half to bring their game tally to 57.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Williams scored 17 points off turnovers; Amherst had 4.

* Amherst's bench played a key role in their efforts, scoring 23 points. Williams' bench scored 16.

* Brandon Roughley's tally of 13 points for the Ephs was more than any other player from either team.
