Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Williams scores twice in third period to edge Mammoths,5-4

AMHERST, MA – Williams scored twice in the third period Friday night at Orr Rink, allowing the Ephs to slip past the Amherst College hockey team 5-4.

Junior Ben Kuzma netted a hat trick for the Mammoths in the loss.

The Mammoths' overall record stands at 13-9-1, with an 8-9-1 record in conference play. They will host Middlebury College at 3 p.m. Saturday in a Senior Day game. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS 
  • Williams' Logan Valkama skated after the puck and took a backhanded shot at the net for David Vieten to secure the rebound for an early 1-0 lead at 16:39 into the commencing period. 
  • Amherst evened the score with 1:18 left in the first period after Ben Ritter chased the puck behind the net and delivered a pass to Ben Kuzma up the ice.
  • 6:53 into the second period, Vincent Velocci won the face-off, where the puck was sent back to Ben Kuzma for a shot that Velocci deflected into the net. 
  • Battling for the puck in Mammoth territory, Eph Brady Welsch fought for it and dished it off to Jamie Cates in the slot. Cates lifted into the top right corner of the net with 10:42 left in the second period.
  • A power-play goal orchestrated by Ritter and Matt Vander Vort sent the puck to Kuzma, who brought it out of traffic and fired a shot for his second goal of the evening with 5:25 left in the second period toput the Mammoths ahead 3-2.
  • Jonah Gold picked up the wide shot from behind the net, skated back to the slot, and buried the puck into the left side of the net at 15:56. 
  • The Ephs scored their fourth goal with 4:18 left in the third period when Sean Clark passed up the boards to Henry Muller. Muller stopped hard outside the crease and flicked the puck into the net to finish. 
  • With just 2.8 seconds left, Amherst won the face-off for Tucker to get the puck and send it up to Kuzma in the high slot. Kuzma's shot into the top left cotner of the goal acconted for the final score.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Amherst outshot Williams 41-28. 
  • The Mammoths went 1-2 on power plays, while the Ephs went 0-2. 
  • The Ephs won 35 of the 66 face-offs. 
  • Connor Leslie saved 23 of the 27 shots he faced on net tonight.
