AMHERST, Mass. – Senior guard
C.J. Mitchells drained 18 points Saturday afternoon, going 6-9 on three-pointers, and senior
Bobby Sommers made 11 rebounds to help the Mammoths to an 88-47 win against Mount Saint Mary College.
Amherst rose to a 7-2 record on the season while Mount Saint Mary fell to 1-6. The Mammoths will travel south to New Haven this Tuesday, where they will meet Albertus Magnus College at 7 p.m. in the Cosgrove Marcus Messer Athletic Center.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
*Mitchell sunk a three-pointer 13 seconds into the contest to blast the Mammoth off on a 3-0 lead. A free throw from senior
Will Scherer and a layup from Sommers made it 6-2 with 18 minutes remaining in the half.
*A three-pointer from Knights sophomore Josiah Jones helped the visitors fight back to find the equalizer 90 seconds later, tying the game 7-7.
*Amherst immediately retaliated with an 8-2 run in the following three minutes, highlighted by a three-pointer each from Sommers and junior
Chris Hammond, plus another layup from Sommers.
*After a turnover with 13:24 remaining gave the Knights a 2 v. 1 breakaway down the court, Scherer hustled back to deliver a strong block and keep the visitors from finding the rim. Amherst countered with an 8-0 run in the next three minutes, with Mitchell sinking two shots from behind the arc and senior Helmke notching a layup to give Amherst an 11-point lead.
*The first stanza closed with a strong showing from junior Hammond in the final six minutes, who drained a three-pointer and a layup in the span of 30 seconds to help the Mammoths close the half 40-26.
* The Mammoths sped away in the second period, blasting off with a 24-4 rally in the first 10 minutes. Strong defensive pressure from Amherst prevented the visitors from finding the rim, while Mitchell punished the Knights by going 3-4 on his three-pointers.

Nate Pabis led another rally in the game's final eight minutes as Amherst went on an 18-0 run between 8:06 and 3:36. The forward bucketed a three-pointer and two jumpers within two minutes, also assisting Hammond on his three-pointer to help close the stanza for the Mammoths 88-47.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* The Mammoths closed the night shooting 43.8% (32-73) from the floor compared to 30.2% (19-63) from the Saints. While Amherst held a lead in three-pointer conversions, 39.5% to 21.4%, the Knights managed a higher accuracy in free throw attempts, 75% to 63.6%.
*Mitchell led as the game's top-scorer, scoring 18 points. Sommers followed behind as the game's only player to achieve a double-double, scoring 12 and making 11 rebounds. Hammond and Pabis also combined for a high-scoring tally, sinking 13 and 12 respectively. Chin garnered the most assists, passing for 5.
