Mammoths bounced by Bethel at Florida Sunshine Shootout, 68-45

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The Amherst College women's basketball team was outscored by 20 points over the final 20 minutes Saturday, ultimately falling to Bethel University (Minn.), 68-45, in action at the Florida Sunshine Shootout's Ocean Center.

Amherst fell to 8-2 on the season. The Mammoths will take on UMass-Boston back at the Ocean Center Sunday at 2 p.m. Bethel improved to 7-1.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first quarter as Elizabeth Cain and Kori Barach sandwiched a pair of free throws from Sylvia Liddle. A 7-0 Bethel run over the next 68 seconds put the Mammoths in a 9-6 hole. A short jumper by Anna Tranum with 2:12 to go in the quarter brought the Mammoths within one at 11-10. At the end of the quarter Amherst trailed 14-10. 

* Amherst trailed 20-10 with 7:57 left in the half, but a 7-0 Amherst run made it a three-point game at 20-17. Barach ignited the run with a basket from the paint. Minutes later, Annie McCarthy drained a three-pointer that made it 20-15. Another Barach basket down low made it 20-17 with 4:44 remaining. 

* Two free throws from Reagan Pahl and a Tranum jumper again brought Amherst within one at 22-21 with 1:29 to go, but Bethel went into the halftime locker room up 25-22.

* Bethel was able to extend its lead to 9 by outscoring the Mammoths 22-16 in the third quarter, and then put a lid on the basket in the fourth stanza, outscoring Amherst 21-7 to win 68-45.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Bethel shot 43 percent from the floor, while the Mammoths just 28.6 percent. Amherst committed 18 turnovers and went 1 for 16 from the three-point line. 

* Barach led Amherst with 15 points and 7 rebounds. Liddle notched 5 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. 

* Elly Schmitz posted a double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds, both team-leading figures.
