Mammoths cool off Blazers, 66-28, in semester finale

AMHERST, MASS.– The Amherst College Women's Basketball team defeated Elms College in a 28-66 decision following double-doubles from Kori Barach, Maya Cwalina, and Brielle Renwick. Barach led the Mammoths with 16 points to victory, followed by senior teammate Cwalina, who had 13 points.
 
Amherst now stands at 8-1 on the season. Next up for the Mammoths is the Florida Sunshine Shootout in Daytona Beach, FL.  Amherst will face Bethel University on December 28 at 2 p.m.
 
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
 
* The Mammoths opened the first quarter with an 11-0 run. The Bolts scored one point off of a free throw with five minutes and 24 seconds on the clock to break it up, but the Mammoths responded well, with Cwalina putting five consecutive points on the board to increase the score to 1-18.
 
* The Mammoths entered the second quarter with a 20-3 lead. Renwick shot a layup in the paint and assisted Anna Tranum to a three-pointer. Elms broke up the Mammoths' scoring with a layup, which Tranum met with another three-pointer with six minutes and 40 seconds on the clock.
 
* Elms and Amherst went back and forth for the remainder of the second quarter, but the Mammoth's early jump on the Bolts kept the lead secure. Renwick snagged a rebound and turned it into a layup to send the Mammoths into halftime with a 14-36 lead.
 
* Cwalina scored a fast-break layup in the paint to begin a 9-0 run in quarter three. Renwick then gained possession of the ball and assisted Annie McCarthy to a three-pointer. Barach had a decisive steal that she turned into a fast-break layup in the paint. The Mammoths never let up, with Barach scoring on both of her free throw attempts in the final two seconds of the quarter.
 
* McCarthy earned an impressive steal five minutes and two seconds into quarter four, which she passed to Tranum, who scored a jumper. The Mammoths increased their margin of victory to 38 points in the last quarter.
 
BY THE NUMBERS:
 
* Barach earned 12 rebounds and 16 points, Cwalina earned 14 rebounds and 13 points, and Renwick earned 13 rebounds and 12 points during the game. Tranum netted 12 points in the victory.
 
* The Mammoths scored 7 of 9 attempted free throws for a 77.8% rate.
