Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

#18 Amherst upset #7 Tufts, 2-1, to reach third consecutive NESCAC Tournament Final

MIDDLETOWN, CT — Saturday afternoon saw the #18 Amherst College women's soccer team continue their strong postseason run as they edged out the Jumbos at Wesleyan's Jackson Field. After dispatching #17 Middlebury 1-0 in the quarterfinals last weekend, Amherst carried their momentum into the semifinal with goals by senior Patience Kum and junior Sophia Haynes. The team now has its sights set on a third straight NESCAC title.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Senior Patience Kum opened the scoring for the Mammoths in the 12th minute, marking her fifth goal of the season. She was set up by her fellow senior teammate, Alyssa Huynh. The Mammoths won a free kick from the right side within their attacking half, and Huynh sent an enticing cross into a dangerous area of the penalty box. Kum skillfully broke free from her Tufts defender by slipping behind her and neatly converted Huynh's cross with a short-range touch into the net.
  • Just eight minutes later, Waverly Summer equalized with her third goal of the season. A long diagonal pass found Summer, who controlled it and surged forward toward the goal. She finished the move with her left foot, sliding the ball into the side netting, out of reach of Amherst's diving goalkeeper, senior Mika Fisher. The rest of the half remained lively, with both teams creating chances that tested their goalkeepers. However, the score held at 1-1 going into halftime.
  • The second half continued at a thrilling pace, with 22 shots recorded. Amherst reclaimed the lead in the 71st minute through junior Sophia Haynes, who was assisted by junior Brooke Ingemi. The goal came off another long-range free-kick delivered into the box. Ingemi got to the ball first, pushing it past the defense and setting up Haynes, who stepped in to calmly place the ball past the keeper. Amherst held control for the final 20 minutes, with Tufts unable to break through or trouble Fisher again in goal.
BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Amherst had 22 shots (10 on target); Tufts had 14 (4 on target).
  • Amherst committed 9 fouls; Tufts made 11.
UP NEXT:
  • Amherst now holds an 11-1-5 overall record (7-1-4 versus NESCAC opposition).
  • Up next: The Mammoths' victory has secured them a spot in the NESCAC Tournament Final, where they will face the Colby College Mules. Colby advanced after a thrilling 3-2 win over the favored #4 Wesleyan University Cardinals in their Semifinal. The final match is set for noon tomorrow at Wesleyan's Jackson Field in Middletown, CT. Amherst will aim to clinch their third straight NESCAC title, having defeated Wesleyan in 2022's final and Bowdoin last year.
