Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

#18 Amherst wins third successive NESCAC Tournament, edging Colby in penalty shootout

MIDDLETOWN, CT — In a thrilling finale on Sunday afternoon, the #18 Amherst College women's soccer team clinched their third consecutive NESCAC Tournament title, edging out the Colby College Mules in a tense penalty shootout. After a scoreless 90 minutes and two overtime periods, the Mammoths secured victory with a flawless 5-4 performance in penalties.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The match began at a breakneck pace, with both teams creating early chances. Colby opened with a blocked attempt, but Amherst quickly responded, testing Colby goalkeeper MK Marshall. Alyssa Huynh led the charge with two consecutive shots, both denied by Marshall, who continued her stellar form by stopping an attempt from junior Sophia Haynes shortly after. Throughout the first half, Amherst's goalkeeper, senior Mika Fisher, kept the Mammoths level with several acrobatic saves, while both defenses held firm to keep the score at 0-0 going into halftime.
  • In the second half, both teams made numerous substitutions, injecting fresh energy into the contest. Junior Kate Quigley opened Amherst's second-half attempts with a high shot, followed by senior Charlotte Huang, whose low drive forced another save from Marshall. As the match wore on, chances became fewer and both defenses tightened, yet Amherst nearly scored the winner in the dying moments of regular time, with Huynh's last-minute effort narrowly saved.
  • Overtime saw a balanced first period, with each side managing three shots but none on target. Amherst pressed hard in the second period, coming closest to breaking the deadlock in the final seconds, as Haynes and Huang forced two spectacular saves from Marshall, her eighth and ninth of the game.
  • The penalty shootout proved to be a nail-biter, with near-perfect execution from both teams. Colby shot first, but Kylie Thorp's miss, striking the post, gave Amherst an opening. Senior Abby Schwartz put Amherst ahead. Junior Brooke Ingemi, senior Patience Kum, senior Alyssa Huynh, and sophomore Precious Novidzro all converted their penalties under pressure, sealing Amherst's victory.
