Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Unbeaten in eight matches, #18 Mammoths beat SUNY New Paltz 2-0 in Round 1 of NCAA Tournament

ROCHESTER, NY — On Saturday afternoon, the #18 Amherst College women's soccer team played in their first-round match of the 2024 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament versus the State University of New York (SUNY) New Paltz Hawks. The Mammoths enjoyed a smooth 2-0 victory over the Hawks, thanks to goals from senior Patience Kum and first-year Caroline Coletti. The Mammoths are now on an eight-match unbeaten run heading into their second-round match tomorrow.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Riding high on confidence from their NESCAC Tournament victory last weekend, Amherst delivered a dominant performance from start to finish, securing a well-deserved win. The team's first chance came nine minutes in, with senior Sierra Rosado sending a shot over the bar. Five minutes later, sophomore Precious Novidzro forced New Paltz goalkeeper Maddie Franklin to make a diving save. However, against the run of play, New Paltz came incredibly close to earning a 1-0 lead from a Hannah Wellinger shot which rattled the woodwork. Amherst continued to press but entered halftime without a breakthrough, despite registering seven shots.
  • The Mammoths came out of the break with renewed intensity, making a goal seem inevitable. New Paltz goalkeeper Maddie Franklin produced six outstanding saves in the first 16 minutes of the second half to keep her side in the game. However, senior Patience Kum finally broke the deadlock with her sixth goal of the season. Connecting with a well-placed cross from senior Fiona Bernet, assisted by first-year Caroline Coletti, Kum expertly headed the ball into the bottom-right corner, leaving Franklin with no chance.
  • Just three minutes later, Coletti doubled Amherst's lead in spectacular fashion. Pouncing on a deflected ball, she unleashed a powerful strike from the right wing that soared into the top-right corner, marking her eighth goal of the season and providing Amherst with a comfortable cushion.
  • From there, the Mammoths controlled possession and wore down their opponents, cruising to a comfortable victory. Amherst's defense remained rock-solid throughout the match; New Paltz had just two shots in the entire game and Amherst goalkeeper, senior Mika Fisher, was forced to make one save over the 90 minutes. The team's commanding performance secured a well-earned win, showcasing their dominance as NESCAC champions.
BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Amherst had 19 shots (11 on target); New Paltz had 2 (1 on target).
  • Amherst committed 10 fouls; New Paltz made 15.
UP NEXT:
  • Amherst now holds an 12-1-6 overall record (8-1-4 versus NESCAC opposition).
  • Up next: The 2024 NESCAC Champions have less than 24 hours to recover and prepare for their second-round match. They will face the #15 University of Rochester Yellowjackets on their soccer field in Rochester, NY. The game will kick off tomorrow at 3pm.
