Leslie stars as Mammoths earn shootout win over Trinity

AMHERST, Mass. -- Andrew Carmody scored two power-play goals Saturday night while senior goaltender Connor Leslie made 33 saves through overtime and stopped both shots he saw in the shootout as the Amherst College men's hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with Trinity College but earned the shootout "win" by a score of 2-0.

Amherst is now 0-1-1 on the season while the Bantams slide to 1-1-1. The Mammoths host Little Three rival Wesleyan back at Orr Rink Sunday at 3 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst trailed 1-0 near the end of the second period when -- moments after a 5-on-3 power play turned into a 5-on-4, Carmody received a pass from Josh Burke right on the face-off dot in the left circle. Carmody snapped a quick shot into the top left corner of the goal, over the shoulder of Trinity goalie Devon Bobek, to tie the game with 90 seconds remaining in the period. Trinity would retake the lead with just 42 seconds left in the frame.

* Early in the third period, the Mammoths went on the power-play once again, and once again Carmody converted the chance. Matt Toporowski blocked a clear and got the puck to Vincent Velocci, who sent it back to the right points onto the stick of Burke, who fired a cross ice pass to Carmody, this time just outside the top of the left circle. The winger one-tied a blast into the far top-right hand corner this time, tying the game at 2-2 with 15:54 to go.

* Leslie made a combined 12 of his 33 stops in the final period and overtime. With 1:50 left in the 3-on-3 extra session, Leslie robbed Trinity's Connor Sedlak of overtime glory, stoning him from just three feet away in the slot. Moments later Trinity had a 2-on-1 but Leslie made a great glove save and the rebounds slid wide left.

* Once OT ended, the game went into the books as a tie, but an extra point was on the line in the shootout. Each team's first shooter missed or was stopped. Ben Kuzma then beat Bobak and Leslie stoned Richard Boysen. Zach Murray then scored on his sht, giving the shootout "win" to the Mammoths.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Both Velocci and Burke had two assists on the night for Amherst.

* The Mammoths lost 40 of 76 face-offs but Toporowski went 17 for 27 on his draws.

* Amherst went 2 for 7 on the power play, Trinity was 1 for 7.
