OSWEGO, NY.-- A high-scoring first quarter the Amherst College women's basketball team Saturday ensured victory over Osweg Stateo, with
Laura Mendell and
Maya Cwalina both scoring in the double digits in a 51-40 victory in the Lakers' Ziel Tournament championship game.

The Mammoths (2-0) will face Albertus Magnus College in a home game in the LeFrak Gymnasium on Tuesday at 5:30 pm.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst led by 11 points at the end of the first quarter. Cwalina led the Mammoths in terms of points in the first quarter, scoring two layups and a driving layup, with
Kori Barach and
Annie McCarthy assisting her. Barach [3:33] and McCarthy [1:44] scored 3-pointers for Amherst, increasing the Mammoths' lead over the Lancers. Mendell also contributed to the scoring scene, shooting a layup and a jumper for 4 points.

* The second quarter remained scoreless for roughly 7 minutes until the Lancers scored a 3-pointer. The Mammoths responded well, with
Sylvia Liddle retaining possession of the ball from a rebound, setting Mendell up for a jumper [6:37] and scoring her own layup [4:02] to elevate the score to 20-12. Mendell contributed significantly to the Mammoths' offense, earning a free throw and scoring on both of her attempts [3:17], and assisting
Macie Nugent to a jumper. Off of a steal from Mendell, Liddle assisted
Brielle Renwick to a driving layup, her first basket of the game.

* The Mammoths put 11 points on the board in the third quarter, while the Lancers put 10. Despite not scoring, Barach had three steals for the Mammoths and earned 2 defensive rebounds. The Mammoths racked 2 3-pointers, scored by Mendell [8:15] and McCarthy in the quarter's final seconds, with only 43 seconds remaining. Cwalina also continued to put points on the board, scoring two layups.

* Amherst scored 14 points to match Oswego's 14 points. Renwick scored 5 points for the Mammoths in the final quarter, scoring a point off of a free throw [9:46], a layup [6:39], and a floating jump shot with less than two minutes remaining. Mendell was a vital component of the Mammoths' defense, turning over the ball 4 times and stealing once. Cwalina put 5 points on the board as well, off of a jumper assisted by Mendell [5:48] and a 3-pointer assisted by Barach [3:48]
