OSWEGO, NY. – Four Mammoths scored in double figures Friday night as the Amherst College women's basketball team opened its season with a 59-52 win over SUNY-Geneseo in the semifinals of the Oswego State Ziel Tournament.
The Mammoths (1-0) will face the host Lakers in the championship game of the tournament tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst trailed by two at 19-17 after the first quarter, but put the clamps on Geneseo over the second 10 minutes, outscoring the Knights 14-5 to take a 31-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.
* Annie McCarthy netted 11 of her team-high 17 points in the first half. She gave the Mammoths a 20-19 lead with a three-pointer that with 7:38 left in the half. With 2 minutes to go, Kori Barach sank a pair of threws throws to break a 24-24 and ignite a half-ending 7-0 run for the Mammoths. After a Barach lay-up made it 28-24 Mammoths, McCarthy put the exclamation point on her half with a three-ball that came with 39 seconds left and accounted for the Mammoths' seven-point lead at the break.
* In the third quarter, Barach score her team's first four points. The Mammoths led by as many as 13 in the third, but the Knights fought back to within eight as the game headed to the final 10 minutes.
* With 3:10 left in the game, the score was knotted at 47-all with Amherst in possession. Some good ball movement freed up McCarthy for another trey attempt and she made the most of it, sinking the three-ball for a 50-47 lead with 2:53 left in the contest.
* Amherst led by one in the final minute when
Sylvia Liddle knocked down a critical jumper from close range with 38 seconds remaining.
* A huge steal from
Laura Mendell set the stage for the final 26 seconds as the Mammoths went 6 for 6 from the foul line to stave of the Geneseo rally.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Liddle (10 points, 11 rebounds) and Barach (11 points, 11 rebounds) both posted double-doubles. Mendell had 11 points and 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. McCarthy added 7 rebounds to her 17-point night.
Macie Nugent notched 8 points in the win.

Maya Cwalina didn't score but she did have 9 rebounds, the difference in the Mammoths' 49-40 edge on the glass.
* Amherst shot 19-64 from the floor (29.7 percent) and 23.1 from the three (6 of 26). However the Mammoths shots 75 percent (15 of 20) from the foul line in the win.
