Hartford, Conn. – Goals in the first and second quarter sent the Amherst College field hockey team past Trinity Tuesday on Robin L. Sheppard Field. The #19-ranked Mammoths won in a 2-1 decision against Trinity College in NESCAC play. The Mammoths' record now stands at 9-6 overall and 4-6 in the conference to conclude the regular season.
The Mammoths' victory will likely result in the Mammoths securing a berth to the NESCAC tournament, dates to be determined.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths' offense played an aggressive first quarter, with
Abbey Kays firing a shot off of a penalty corner from
Kate Smith that the Bantams blocked
* Roughly eight seconds later,
Justine Liguori gained possession of the ball, firing a perfectly-timed shot, scoring the game's first goal [6:40]

Sam Maynard fired two promising shots, roughly two minutes apart in the later part of the first quarter, both of which were blocked by Trinity's goalie

Grace Puchalski continued her incredible season as the Mammoth's goalie, blocking a rocket fired by Trinity's Izzy Deveney

Kate Smith was inserted for a penalty corner, and over the course of a few seconds, both
Justine Liguori and
Kate Smith fired promising shots that Trinity blocked. The Mammoths continued to battle, scoring a goal when
Kate Smith passed the ball to Caroline Bussler, setting her up to score an insurance goal for the Mammoths [27:33]
* Trinity's offense eventually found a hold in the Mammoths' defense, scoring a goal in the third quarter that lifted the score to 2-1 [37:40].
* The Mammoths' defense had an incredible fourth quarter, with Puchalski saving two back-to-back shots in the middle of the final quarter and the Mammoths' defense blocking three shots to secure victory over Trinity.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* The Mammoths had a 17-7 advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge in penalty corners.
* Amherst's record against Trinity now stands at 14-12 overall
