CLINTON, N.Y. – After working themselves back into the game to go up 2-1 from a one-goal deficit, the Amherst College Mammoths conceded a final goal in the 89th minute to tie the Hamilton College Continentals on the road Saturday.
It was the fourth tie of the season for the Mammoths, who are now 7-1-4 overall and 4-1-3 in the NESCAC while Hamilton's record moves to 5-5-3 overall and 2-4-3 in the conference.
Amherst plays next on Sunday to face Sarah Lawrence at home. Game time is 1 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* One minute into the match,
Patience Kum drew a penalty kick for the Mammoths after creating a dangerous chance off of a long pass from senior
Fiona Bernet. Kum took the shot, and Hamilton keeper Nieve Tonna blocked the shot which rebounded outward. Kum got to the rebound first and the shot went just wide.
* While Amherst dominated much of the possession in the Continentals defensive half, in the 14th minute, Hamilton generated a chance off of the transition and after a through ball and a shot taken from the top of the 18 curved into the upper right corner, the Continentals went up, 1-0. The Mammoths could not equalize before half despite outshooting the Continentals, 17-3, in the first period of the match.
* Amherst used the halftime break to regroup and the energetic start for the Mammoths resulted in 15 shots in the first 15 minutes of the second half. The last of these 15 resulted in the Amherst equalizer. After a shot from
Caroline Coletti forced the keeper to make a grueling save that rebounded out of her grasp, sophomore
Halle Hanna ran onto it for a close range finish into the bottom left. This was Hanna's third goal of the season.
* With 19 minutes to go, freshman
Abigail Danso received the ball on the flank about 40 yards from the goal. She launched a rocket into the box intended for
Jessica Lomo who was crashing the goal, but instead, a Hamilton defender, attempting to head the ball away, instead deflected the ball back into her own goal to put the Mammoths up, 2-1.
* In the final minutes, a foul committed by Amherst just outside the 18-yard box led to a dangerous free kick. The Continentals found the ball in the air and forced
Mika Fisher to make a huge save and put the ball out for a corner kick. With a minute and 20 seconds to go, the Continentals won the header off the corner kick, and put the ball in the back of the net to equalize the game.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst held a 41-8 advantage in shots and had 15 corner kicks in the game to the Continentals one.
* Fisher made two saves in goal for the Mammoths.
