#16 Mammoths hand #22 Hamilton 7-0 defeat

CLINTON, N.Y. – Junior Anna Aiello scored two early goals and senior Sam Maynard produced three assists to lead the 16th-ranked Mammoths to a 7-0 victory over the 22nd-ranked Hamilton field hockey team on Saturday afternoon at Goodfriend Field.

The Mammoths closed the week having secured two shutouts and a whopping 13-goal tally. Amherst improved their standings to 8-5 overall and 3-5 in NESCAC play while the Continentals fell to 7-7 and 3-6 in the conference. The Mammoths will return home for Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 26, to host NESCAC rivals Bowdoin at 12 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths immediately got on top of the Continentals, firing five shots before Aiello found the back of the net under six minutes into the match. Senior Kate Smith inserted to Maynard from a penalty corner, who turned to find Aiello to her right. Aiello took a touch forward on her way into the circle, then fired the ball into the bottom left corner to notch her fourth goal of the season and open the match 1-0 for Amherst.

*Aiello added another to Amherst's lead in the 11th minute of the second quarter after the Mammoths were awarded a penalty corner. In a sequence nearly identical to their first goal, Smith inserted to Maynard, who found Aiello open at the top of the circle. Aiello once again took a touch inside, then blasted the ball between the posts.

*Amherst kept looking to increase its lead in the third quarter, notching three more goals for the Mammoths. Under two minutes into the quarter, first-year Caroline Busler passed across the circle to junior Isa Lattuada. The midfielder's shot rocketed toward the left post, finding the stick of Maynard and flying into the goal. The Mammoths found the back of the net again five minutes later when junior Molly Donegan dribbled into the circle, crossed the ball to Maynard, and returned to slip Maynard's shot into the net. Busler closed the third quarter with a fifth goal for the Mammoths after a sequence of passes from a penalty corner led sophomore Chloe Agopian to split the Continental defense and find Busler in front of goal, who deflected the ball upwards and between the posts to end the quarter up 5-0 for the Mammoths.

* Senior Paige DiBiase opened another opportunity for Amherst only 49 seconds into the fourth quarter when the forward stole the ball from a Hamilton pass at the 23-meter line, dribbling into the circle and passing wide to find sophomore Genevieve Caruso open at the left post. Caruso wove around the Hamilton goaltender and scooped the ball into the net for her second goal of the season.

* The Mammoths closed the match with a 7-0 lead after Smith added one last goal to the tally. The defender inserted to first-year Emily Huehn, whose slapshot fired the ball back to Smith inside the left post, deflecting the ball up and into the net.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Amherst held a 17-6 shot advantage and an even wider 14-1 edge in shots on goal.

* The Mammoths created 12 penalty corner chances, with 5 in the second quarter alone, to 3 total from Hamilton.

* Sophomore Grace Puchalski faced zero shots in goal for Amherst, subbing out in the fourth quarter for senior Sara Nidus, who made one save.
