Xu’s last-minute goal pushes #4 Mammoths past Bowdoin 3-2

BOWDOIN, Me. –  Alyssa Xu's last-minute goal pushed the fourth-ranked Amherst College women's hockey team past Bowdoin Saturday afternoon, 3-2.

The Mammoths started off strong, building a two-goal lead on markers from Xu and Rylee Glennon. Bowdoin put two in after, both on power plays tying the score. With 41 seconds left Xu found the back of the net for the second time, putting the Mammoths ahead for good.

With the win Amherst improves to 14-2-2 and Bowdoin falls to 8-10-2. Amherst will face Colby College next Saturday February 2, for a 7 p.m. puck drop at home in Orr rink. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Mammoths started the game off strong scoring with 2:13 minutes played. Anna Baxter passed to Rylee Glennon from behind the net, who then found Alyssa Xu right in front of the Bear goal who pushed the puck past Bowdoin keeper Sarah Peterson advancing the Mammoths to a one goal lead. 
  • With 11:01 left the Mammoths went on a power play. The Mammoths were able to steal the puck back as the Bears were trying to clear from their defensive end. Gretchen Dann shot from just in front of the goal to the bottom right, but Peterson slid to cover it. 
  • With 11:41 played the Bears started on a power play. With a block from Emily Hohmann and two saves from Mammoth goalkeeper Natalie Stott, the Mammoths were able to successfully kill the penalty. 
  • With 4:24 left Xu, Baxter and Glennon connected again to score the Mammoths second goal of the game. Baxter found Xu in front of the goal who took a shot that went just right. The puck bounced off the back boars finding Glennon who pushed the puck to the back right of the net.
  • The Bears switched the momentum with 1:43 left, when on a power play, Anyi Sun back passed to Elena DiMagno who took a shot high right going past Stott to make the score 2-1.
  • In the third period with 8:55 left, on another Bowdoin power play,  Jane Carter took a shot from far right, it rebounded off Stott and was found by DiMagno who shot again to the bottom left tieing the score. 
  • The Mammoths are able to bounce back with only 41 seconds left in the third period preventing overtime. Dann took a shot from high left, which flew by Peterson putting the Mammoths ahead 3-2. 

BY THE NUMBERS:
  • The Mammoths outshot the Bears 14-11 in the first period, and 16-9 in the second, and the Bears outshot the Mammoths 19-6 in the third. 
  • The Mammoths won 29 of the 56 face-offs, with Baxter winning 11.
  • Peterson made 22 saves and Stott made 21.
