AMHERST, Mass.– The Mammoths mounted a strong comeback in the third period against the Hamilton College Continentals, narrowing a 4-goal deficit. However, the clock ran out, finalizing the 7-6 decision in favor of Hamilton this evening at Orr Rink.
The two teams combined for 13 total goals, one goal shy of the NESCAC record of collective goals scored. It was the most goals scored by two men's teams at Orr Rink in over 20 years.
Amherst fell to a 9-6-0 record overall, with a 5-5-0 in-conference record. The Mammoths will be on the road tomorrow to face Anna Maria College at 4:40 p.m. for an non-conference game.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Hamilton's Jeremy Smith intercepted the puck in the air when the Mammoths attempted a clear from their zone. Smith passed from the right boards to the high slot where Alex Danis was stationed and fired a shot to give the Continentals the lead at 6:10 in the opening period.
- At 9:11 of the first period, a power-play goal unfolded through a series of passes that weaved the Continentals' way down the ice. Ben Zimmerman passed the puck to Danis, who then directed it to Grisha Gotovets in the slot. Gotovets relayed the puck to Jackson Krock on his right, setting up the goal-scoring shot.
- Ben Kuzma netted the Mammoths' first goal at 13:07 into the opening period. Spencer Kimball initiated the play, passing the puck to Tyler Bourque in the right circle. Bourque then made a cross-ice pass, setting up Kuzma for a one-timer that found the back of the net.
- With 4:36 left in the first period, Amherst capitalized on a power-play goal. Josh Burke delivered the puck to Bourque in the left circle, who sent it back to Burke in the high slot for a successful shot.
- Hamilton increased its lead mid-way through the second period. Following a sequence of shots on Amherst's net, Brown retrieved the puck in the right corner, passing it behind the net to Liebl, who then set up Danis for his third goal of the evening at 12:50 in the second period.
- Hamilton led 7-3 after two periods of play.
- Amherst's first goal of the third period was credited to Bobby Luca's persistent defense in Hamilton's zone. Just after Hamilton controlled the face-off, Luca stole the puck, sending it into the back of the net from a wide angle shot at 4:22 to make it 7-4.
- At 12:35 in the final period, Connor McGinnis cleared the puck for Ryan Tucker to carry it into the right face-off circle and take a wrist-shot into the net to bring the Mammoths within a 2-goal reach of the Continentals.
- After a puck scrum by the boards, Burke gained possession by the left point. He then passed it to the opposite end of the blue line, finding Kuzma, who delivered a long shot into the goal for his second score of the evening with 59 seconds remaining to make it 7-6.
BY THE NUMBERS

- Hamilton went 3-4 for power plays, whereas Amherst went 2-6.
