AMHERST, Mass. -- Senior
Muffie Mazambani scored two goals and assisted another Tuesday night as the 10th-ranked Amherst College field hockey team rolled to a 6-1 victory over Smith College in its season opener at Hill Field.
Amherst (1-0) travels to Middlebury Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest with the reigning national champions of Div. III. Smith fell to 2-1 with the loss.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Mazambani set up the first goal of the season, weaving her way to the goalline, then cutting to her left. As she approached the goal, she drew a defender and the goalie, then slid a pass to a wide-open
Sam Maynard, who quickly deposited a shot behind the Smith goalie with 4 minutes and 42 seconds into the contest.
* Junior
Paige DiBiase made it 2-0 off a corner with 6:36 left in the second quarter. Junior
Kat Mason took the insertion from
Kate Smith and delivered a blast that was saved. The rebound came back to Mason, but a Pioneer defender took possession, only to have DiBiase steal the ball from her and fired a shot over the right shoulder of the goalkeeper for the two-goal advantage.
* It stayed 2-0 until 2:22 remained in the half. Sophomore
Anna Aiello controlled the puck just inside the circle, sliding to her left to create some shooting space and delivering a rocket of a shot off her backhand then beat the keeper to the top right-hand corner of the goal.
* The Mammoths made it 4-0 just 46.8 seconds before the half break after Aiello fired a shot from the top of the circle on the right that found the stick of teammate
Molly Donegan, who re-directed a few feet back toward Mazambani, who one-time a quick shot into the left side of the net for a four-goal lead.
* Amherst built a 6-0 lead in the final half on the backs of goals from Mazambani, her second off an assist from Maynard, and first-year
Genevieve Caruso.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst dictated the pace of the game while outshooting the visitors, 31-2. The Mammoths had nine penalty corners to Smith's two.
