#9 Mammoths edged by #11 Williams at home, 1-0

AMHERST, Mass– The 9th ranked Amherst College women's soccer team narrowly lost against 11th ranked Williams College in a 1-0 game on Gooding Field Saturday.

The loss was the Mammoths first of the season as their record dropped to 7-1-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the conference. Williams improved to 7-0-1 overall and 4-0-1 in te NESCAC. Next, the Mammoths will be on the road at Wesleyan Saturday, October 7th.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The game opened with Amherst coming out as the stronger, more physical team and maintaining most of the possession in the first half, with junior forward Patience Kum executing a slide tackle on Williams' Tori Huang to set the tone for the game. With multiple good chances at goal, the Mammoths were unable to find the back of the net.

* One of those chances came against the run of play when a 3 on 2 developed. Kum slid the ball to her left to Liza Katz, but  Ephs' keeper Margaret Huelin rushed out of the goal and smothered Katz's shot.

* To open the second half, Williams stepped onto the field with more energy than its first-half performance. Four minutes into the second half, a free kick led to a scramble in the box and two saves by Amherst keeper Katya Besch couldn't stop Williams' Ava Simunovic from scoring, toe poking the ball into the bottom right corner.

* Though the Mammoths responded valiantly, and even tried multiple formations against the Ephs as the minutes ticked by, they were unable to equalize, and the match ended 1- nil.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* The Mammoths outs hot the Ephs in the first half 6-2, but Williams got the edge with shots in the second, with 6 hots to Amherst's 4.

* The corner kicks were 5-0 in favor of Williams.
