Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

#11 Mammoths edge Wesleyan, 1-0, on Abby Schwartz score

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Finding the back of the net in the 50th minute, Abby Schwartz's fifth goal of the fall became the game-winner as the 11th-ranked Amherst College women's soccer team beat Wesleyan University Saturday.

This win improves the Mammoths record to 8-1-1 on the season and to 5-1-1 in conference play, while Wesleyan falls to 5-3-2 overall (2-2-2 NESCAC). Amherst returns to the field tomorrow, Sunday, October 8 on the road at Bowdoin College for a 2:30 p.m. start.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* After a first half with many great chances from the Mammoths including a great effort from range by Abby Schwartz, Wesleyan goalkeeper Molly Brumbach made three phenomenal saves to keep the sheet clean into halftime.

* The Cardinals opened the second half with some dangerous set pieces, but the Mammoth defense continued to keep a shutout despite the momentum shift.

* Hunting down a pass back from a center back to the Wesleyan goalkeeper, Abby Schwartz saw more action as she hit a ball low to the far post in a 1v1 with Brumbach, forcing the Cardinal goalie to make an excellent save.

*In the 50th minute, first-year Precious Novidzro received the ball and drove up the field, beating two players and looking up just in time to see junior Patience Kum running in behind. Her pass was right to Kum, who shot and made Brumbach make another incredible save. Schwartz kept the play alive however, and determined to beat Brumbach, received the rebounded shot at the top of the box and buried it into the right side netting to put the Mammoths up 1-0.

* With many more threatening chances, notably a breakaway by Kum in the final six seconds, the game concluded favoring the Mammoths 1-nil.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* The Mammoths out shot the Cardinals 17(10 on frame) to 10(4 on frame) and in corner kicks, 9 to the Cardinals' 4.

* Mike Fisher and Katya Besch split time in goal for Amherst, with Besch playing the final 56:05 and making two saves while picking up the win. Fisher also made 2 saves for the Mammoths.
