#10 Mammoths hit the road for 3-0 win over Camels

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The 10th-ranked Amherst College field hockey team posted a 3-0 victrory over Connecticut College on  Wednesday night in NESCAC action at the Camels' Silfen Field.

The Mammoths scored goals in each of the final three periods to improve to 5-3 overall (3-2 NESCAC). Justine Ligouri netted the game-winning goal late in the first half, and Kate Smith and Muffie Mazambani added tallies in the second. The Camels fell to 2-4 overall, 0-3 in conference play.

Next up for the Mammoths is rival Williams Saturday at 11 a.m. on Hill Field.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The first quarter ended scoreless despite each team having multiple penalty corner opportunities. On the Mammoths' fourth of the quarter, Abbey Kays ripped a shot from the middle of the circle that just whistled past the left post.

* The Mammoths broke the stalemate on a penalty corner with 2:37 left in the half. Amherst played the ball around the top of the scoring circle before Kat Mason ripped a shot that Ligouri deflected past Winemaster for the score. Smith inserted the ball to Kays at the top left and Kays slid a pass over to Mazambani in center top of the circle. With a defender marking her closely, Mazambani lost the ball for a second but was able to poke it over to Kat Mason on the right. Mason drilled a shot into the circle that Ligouri -- stationed just above and to the right of the goal, was able to re-direct into the goal for a 1-0 lead.

* The Mammoths added their second goal with less than three minutes left in the third. Sam Maynard put a shot on goal that was stopped by Winemaster, but the ball squirted to the post where it was knocked in by Smith.

* Mazambani added the final tally with 7:40 left in the game, backhanding a loose ball into the back of the cage to make it 3-0. Quinn later put a shot on goal for the Camels, but Amherst goalie Sara Nidus was there to make her lone save of the night.
