No. 10 Mammoths continue mastery of Mules, 3-0

AMHERST, Mass. -- Junior Fiona Bernet had a goal and assist Sunday as the 10th-ranked Amherst College women's soccer team ran its win streak to six games with a 3-0 victory over Colby College on Hitchcock Field.

The Mammoths improved to 7-0-1 on the season, 4-0-1 in NESCAC play. Amherst next plays rival Williams at home Saturday at 12 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Colby came out with a ton of energy and carried play at times in the first half. Amherst junior Katya Besch started in goal for the first time in her career and made two saves in the opening stanza. The Mules defense was able to limit the Mammoths scoring opportunities for much of the half, but Amherst struck for two goals in the final 11:38 of the half.

* Bernet got the scoring started with 11:38 remaining. She received a throw-in from the right sideline delivered by teammate Kate Quigley, dribbled a step toward the goal and from 25 yards out sent a laser across the field that tucked itself just inside the upper 90 on the left side of the goal for the lead. It was Bernet's third goal of the season.

* The Mammoths next goal was equal in the beauty of its execution. With 2:27 remaining, Precious Novidzro had a corner kick from the left side of the Colby goal. She delivered a low line drive of a kick to the near post. Junior Patience Kum jumped in front of the Colby keeper and was able to re-direct the ball into the goal past a Mule defender for a 2-0 lead.

* Amherst's final goal came with 31:50 remaining in the contest. Bernet received a short pass from Liza Katz just inside of midfield on the Colby side. She turned and rocketed a pass into the Colby box that put Abby Schwartz behind the Mules defense and 1 v. 1 with the keeper. Schwartz quickly flicked the ball past the keeper into the far right side of the goal for her fourth goal in the last four games.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Amherst out shot Colby 10-9. Besch and teammate Lulu Fickes combined for seven saves for the Mammoths.

* It was the ninth consecutive shutout of the Mules for Amherst, dating back to the 2014 season. The Mammoths have won 19 straight against Colby and are 26-0-2 in their history against the Mules.
