AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College volleyball team fell in straight sets to in-state rival Wheaton College as the Lyons tallied a 25-23, 25-17, 25-14 win on Tuesday night at LeFrak Gymnasium.

The Lyons remain undefeated at 7-0 this season while the Mammoths fall to 4-3. Amherst is back in action on Friday (Sept. 15), kicking off the NESCAC slate with a 7 p.m. match at Hamilton.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:

* The first set was tight throughout with 11 ties and 4 lead changes. The Lyons took their biggest lead at 14-9 after a run of five straight points but the Mammoths responded by winning the next six points on the serve of senior Carly Cooper, tying the set at 14-14 on a kill from first-year Chideraa Ngwadom and taking the lead on the next point when first-year Bailey Reid and senior Chloe Chanren combined on a block. The set stayed close and was tied at 23-23 before a kill from sophomore Celina Henn and an ace from classmate Hollis Hanson won the set for Wheaton.

* The Lyons improved their margin of victory in each subsequent set. Wheaton took an early 7-2 lead in the second set and never relinquished the lead as Henn tallied six kills in the set.

* The Mammoths started stronger in the third, tying the set at 3-3 and coming back to trail by a 6-7 margin, but a string of six straight points on the serve of senior Julianna Flack gave Wheaton a 15-7 lead and the Lyons scored seven of the final nine points to maintain their perfect record.
