#11 Mammoths earn precious win over Smith, 1-0

AMHERST, Mass. -- First-year Precious Novidzro scored 3 minutes and 24 seconds into the second half Sunday, lifting the Amherst College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over visiting Smith College in a game thrice-delayed by lightning on Gooding Field.

Amherst improved to 2-0-1 on the season. The Mammoths will play host to Lasell Thursday at 6 p.m. Smith fell to1-1-1.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths took all nine shots in the first half, but could not find the back of the net. Alyssa Huynh had a golden opportunity in the first 10 minutes, but her first shot was saved by Smith goalkeeper Skylar Smith, and her rebound attempt connected with the crossbar.

* Early in the 28th minute, Patience Kum had a shot stopped by Smith, and her rebound attempt was blocked by a Smith defender.

* As the half was winding down the Mammoths created a couple of corner kick chances, but Abby Schwartz and Kate Quigley both had headers go wide.

* The Mammoths were finally able to crack the code early in the second stanza. Charlotte McGuire's throw-in from the right sideline, just inside the midfield stripe, bounced off a Pioneer defender's head to the feet of Jessica Lomo. Lomo quickly slotted a ball between two Pioneers and toward the goal. Noridzro raced onto the ball a split second before Smith could grab it, flicking it over  the goalkeeper's shoulder and into the goal with 41:36 remaining,

* Amherst goalkeeper LuLu Fickes came up with a big save with 22:10 remaining, reaching back behind her head and flicking the ball forward. It was eventually cleared after a few anxious moments.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* The Mammoths finished with a 19-2 edge in shots. Amherst took seven corner kicks in the game to the Pioneers two.

* Smith's Smith made six saves, while the Mammoths' Fickes made one.
