AMHERST, Mass. -- First-year
Precious Novidzro scored 3 minutes and 24 seconds into the second half Sunday, lifting the Amherst College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over visiting Smith College in a game thrice-delayed by lightning on Gooding Field.
Amherst improved to 2-0-1 on the season. The Mammoths will play host to Lasell Thursday at 6 p.m. Smith fell to1-1-1.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths took all nine shots in the first half, but could not find the back of the net.
Alyssa Huynh had a golden opportunity in the first 10 minutes, but her first shot was saved by Smith goalkeeper Skylar Smith, and her rebound attempt connected with the crossbar.
* Early in the 28th minute,
Patience Kum had a shot stopped by Smith, and her rebound attempt was blocked by a Smith defender.
* As the half was winding down the Mammoths created a couple of corner kick chances, but
Abby Schwartz and
Kate Quigley both had headers go wide.
* The Mammoths were finally able to crack the code early in the second stanza.
Charlotte McGuire's throw-in from the right sideline, just inside the midfield stripe, bounced off a Pioneer defender's head to the feet of
Jessica Lomo. Lomo quickly slotted a ball between two Pioneers and toward the goal. Noridzro raced onto the ball a split second before Smith could grab it, flicking it over the goalkeeper's shoulder and into the goal with 41:36 remaining,

LuLu Fickes came up with a big save with 22:10 remaining, reaching back behind her head and flicking the ball forward. It was eventually cleared after a few anxious moments.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* The Mammoths finished with a 19-2 edge in shots. Amherst took seven corner kicks in the game to the Pioneers two.
* Smith's Smith made six saves, while the Mammoths' Fickes made one.
