Mammoths win regular-season finale, 15-7, over Fitchburg State

FITCHBURG, Mass. -- Jack McDermott went 3 for 6 to pace an 13-hit attack Wednesday as the Amherst College Baseball Team wrapped up its regular season with a 15-7 win against Fitchburg State at the Falcons' Michael P. Riccards Field.

The Mammoths are now 20-12-1 heading into a best-of-three NESCAC Tournament quarterfinal series against Tufts Saturday and Sunday (if necessary). The first game Saturday begins at 12 p.m. The Falcons fall to 17-17 on the season.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The game tied 3-3 when the Mammoths exploded for six runs in the top of the fourth. Jack Boyle got things started with a single to right field, then stole second. After an out, McDermott singled up the middle to score Boyle for a 4-3 Amherst lead. Luke Padian walked and Jack Dove reached on an error that loaded the bases. Javier Irizarry worked a bases-loaded walk to force in another run. A wild pitch scored Padian and, on the play, a throwing error allowed Dove to score as well.

* Jackson Reydel then walked and stole second. Christian Fagnant was walked to re-load the bases. Boyle then lined his second single of the inning, this one a line drive to center field that brought home two more runs and made it 9-3 Amherst.

* A Padian sacrifice in the fifth inning made it 10-3 and a two-run from Jack Sampedro in the sixth made it 12-3.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* In addition to their 13 hits Wednesday, the Mammoths were walked 10 times and the Falcons committed five errors.
