FITCHBURG, Mass. --
Jack McDermott went 3 for 6 to pace an 13-hit attack Wednesday as the Amherst College Baseball Team wrapped up its regular season with a 15-7 win against Fitchburg State at the Falcons' Michael P. Riccards Field.
The Mammoths are now 20-12-1 heading into a best-of-three NESCAC Tournament quarterfinal series against Tufts Saturday and Sunday (if necessary). The first game Saturday begins at 12 p.m. The Falcons fall to 17-17 on the season.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The game tied 3-3 when the Mammoths exploded for six runs in the top of the fourth.
Jack Boyle got things started with a single to right field, then stole second. After an out, McDermott singled up the middle to score Boyle for a 4-3 Amherst lead.
Luke Padian walked and
Jack Dove reached on an error that loaded the bases.
Javier Irizarry worked a bases-loaded walk to force in another run. A wild pitch scored Padian and, on the play, a throwing error allowed Dove to score as well.
* Jackson Reydel then walked and stole second.
Christian Fagnant was walked to re-load the bases. Boyle then lined his second single of the inning, this one a line drive to center field that brought home two more runs and made it 9-3 Amherst.
* A Padian sacrifice in the fifth inning made it 10-3 and a two-run from
Jack Sampedro in the sixth made it 12-3.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* In addition to their 13 hits Wednesday, the Mammoths were walked 10 times and the Falcons committed five errors.
* Sophomore southpaw
Tyson Luna improved to 4-1 on the season with two scoreless innings of relief.
* McDermott went 3 for 6 with an RBI and two runs scored. Irizarry was 2 for 3 with an RBI and three runs scored. Reydel was 2 for 4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Boyle was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Padian was 1 for 3 with 3 RBIs and a run scored.
