MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The #15-ranked Amherst College women's lacrosse team suffered an 17-7Â loss to Little 3 and NESCAC rival Wesleyan Wednesday night on the Cardinals' Smith Field.
It was just the second loss of the season for the Mammoths, who fell to 7-2 overall, 3-2 in NESCAC play. Wesleyan improved to 8-1 overall, 4-1 in te NESCAC. Amherst will host Colby College Saturday at noon on Gooding Field.Â

Clara Sosa scored with 3:23 remaining in the first period to make it a 2-1 game with Wesleyan in front.

* The Cardinals scored the first six goals of the second quarter to build an 8-1 lead, a run which was broken up by a
Bridget Finley goal off a pass from
Fiona Jones with 3:46 remaining. Wesleyan led 9-2 at halftime.Â
* Wesleyan scored the first three goals of the third period to build a 12-2 lead. Amherst first-year
Emily Petersen scored a woman-up goal with 5:21 left to make it 12-3.Â
* The Mammoths scored the final three goals of the fourth quarter to account for the final score.Â
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Wesleyan outshot the Mammoths 29-18 in the game and grabbed 23 groundballs to the Mammoths 10.Â
* Petersen and Finley finished with 3 goals each for Amherst. Guttmann added 2 assists.Â
