#10 Amherst finishes off regular season with 16-10 win at Trinity

HARTFORD, Conn. – First-year attack Bob Gross and senior midfielder Bayard DeMallie each scored four goals as the Amherst College men's lacrosse team capped the regular season with a 16-10 win over Trinity College in NESCAC action on Wednesday evening at Jessee/Miller Field.

The Mammoths, ranked 10th in the nation in the latest USILA Division III poll, finish the regular season at 10-4 overall and 6-4 in NESCAC play, finishing in a three-way tie for third place in the NESCAC standings. With the tiebreakers applied, the Mammoths earn the fourth seed in the NESCAC Tournament and will host fifth-seeded Bowdoin in a quarterfinal matchup on Saturday (April 29).

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The first half was an evenly matched affair as the two sides traded goals in the first quarter. Trinity junior midfielder Andrew Bailey opened the scoring but DeMallie answered soon after for the Mammoths. First-year midfielder Jack Almeida put the Bantams back on top 33 seconds later before sophomore attack Alex Giacobbe scored his ninth goal of the season for the Mammoths later in the period to tie the score at 2-2.

* Each side netted three straight goals in the second quarter. DeMallie converted a pair of man-up opportunities to complete his hat trick before halftime and Gross followed with a goal to put Amherst up, 5-2, with 5:52 to play in the second. The Bantams countered with the next three goals as Almeida scored with 14 seconds left in the quarter to send the teams to halftime knotted at 5-5.

* The Mammoths used a 7-2 third quarter to take control of the game, scoring the first three goals after halftime in a 61-second span to take a lead they never relinquished. Junior attack Jake Bennett gave Amherst the lead with his 30th goal of the season, followed 37 seconds later by the third goal of the season from senior midfielder Brodie Rayment. Gross scored Amherst's third goal in a man-up situation to give the Mammoths an 8-5 lead with 10:26 on the clock in the third.

* After sophomore defenseman John Cowdrick scored for the Bantams, the Mammoths unleashed a string of four straight goals. Junior midfielder Connor Guest scored his seventh goal of the season and senior attack Tanyr Krummenacher followed 13 seconds later. Krummenacher then set up goals 59 seconds apart from senior midfielder Matt Adams and Gross to give the Mammoths a 12-6 lead before Harrison Ike scored for the Bantams with three seconds to play in the third.

* Another four-goal run opened the fourth quarter for the Mammoths. DeMallie scored his fourth of the game followed by strikes from Krummenacher and Gross 20 seconds apart. First-year midfielder Matthew Sheinberg capped the scoring with his second of the season to give the Mammoths a 16-7 lead with 7:23 to play. The Bantams scored three goals in the final three minutes but could not pull any closer.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Krummenacher tallied eight points with two goals and a career-best six assists. It was the third eight-point game of his career and second this season. He finishes the regular season as the only Mammoth to score a goal in every game this season.

* Gross added two assists to go with the third four-goal game of his rookie campaign.

* The Mammoths outshot the Bantams, 54-35. Sophomore goalkeeper Mitch Likins made nine saves to earn the win for Amherst.

* The Bantams held a 30-28 edge in ground balls, though Rayment scooped up a game-high seven ground balls.

* Sophomore Hayden Shin won 16 of 29 face-offs for the Bantams.
