Petersen, Sosa each score four as #15 Amherst rolls to 14-4 win at Connecticut College

NEW LONDON, Conn. – First-years Emily Petersen and Clara Sosa each scored four goals as the Amherst College women's lacrosse team rolled to a 14-4 win over Connecticut College in NESCAC action on Wednesday evening at Silfen Field.

The Mammoths, ranked 15th in the nation in the latest IWLCA Division III poll, improved to 8-3 overall and 4-3 in the NESCAC, while the Camels fell to 4-7 and remained winless through their first seven conference games.

The Mammoths are back in action on Saturday (April 15), hosting archrival Williams for a 1 p.m. tilt on Pratt Field at Lehrman Stadium. Amherst's seniors will be honored before the game.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Petersen scored the first two goals for the Mammoths on free-position shots less than a minute apart and Amherst never relinquished the lead.

* The Camels got on the board with a goal from senior midfielder Emily Yorns, but first-year midfielder Bridget Finley answered for the Mammoths less than a minute later and Petersen scored again to complete the hat trick before the first quarter ended.

* Sosa and senior midfielder Fiona Jones scored for the Mammoths in the second quarter to give Amherst a 6-2 halftime lead.

* Sosa was responsible for all three Amherst goals in the third quarter, giving the Mammoths a 9-4 lead entering the final frame.

* The Mammoths left no doubt in the fourth quarter, closing the game with five straight goals. Petersen scored her fourth of the game less than a minute into the period with goals to follow from first-year midfielder Sofia Guttmann, senior attack Sydney Larsen, first-year midfielder Morgan Lebek and sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Rose.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* The Mammoths held a 30-12 advantage in shots and Amherst first-year goalkeeper Jessye Salmon made five saves to earn the win.

* Senior attack Sydney Larsen tallied eight draw controls as the Mammoths won 16 of 22 draws.

* Amherst held a 17-16 edge in ground balls as sophomore defender Brynn Korpi led the Mammoths with three ground balls.
