Strong Defensive Effort Leads #18 Mammoths to 11-8 win at Bowdoin

BRUNSWICK, Me. -- First-year Clara Sosa scored five goals and classmate Bridget Finley added three more Saturday as the #18 Amherst College women's lacrosse team held off #15 Bowdoin, 11-8, at Ryan Field.

The win was the Mammoths fifth straight, and improved their overall mark to 7-1 and 3-1 in conference play. Next up is a home game Wednesday at 6 p.m. vs. Little 3 rival Wesleyan University.  Bowdoin fell to 3-6 overall, 1-4 in the NESCAC.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Sosa and Finley each scored twice in th first half. With 3:25 left in the second stanza, Sydney Larsen flipped a pass out in front of the Bowdoin goal. Finley couldn't handle it initially, but scooped up the loose ball to the right of the keeper, turned back toward the goal and fired a shot into the top right-hand corner for a 3-2 lead. The Mammoths would score again only 20 seconds later as Emily Petersen won a draw control and passed the ball to Sosa, who was fouled and awarded a free-position shot. Sosa cashed in that opportunity for a 4-2 halftime lead.

* The third quarter belonged to Amherst as the Mammoths scored five of the first six goals in the period to build a 9-3 lead. Amherst outshot its hosts 7-2 in the frame. Sosa scored three of the Mammoths' first four goals in the period, scoring at even strength twice and in a woman-up situation once. Neither team scored in the first 6:09 of the period until Sosa's unassisted tally, her third goal at that point, made it 5-2 with 8:51 left.

* Petersen scored both of her goals in the closing minutes of the third quarter, both unassisted, and Finley added one with 42 seconds to go in the period for a 10-4 lead. Bowdoin scored four straihgt goals in the fourth quarter to make it close at 10-8. Amherst first-year Morgan Lebek scored her second goal of the season on a woman-up opportunity for the Mammoths' only goal of the quarter and an 11-8 lead. It was her second goal of the season.
