SPRINGFIELD, MA -- Seven consecutive second-half goals Tuesday night sent the Amherst College women's lacrosse team to its second straight win to open the season via a 12-5 win at Springfield College's Stagg Field.
First years
Clara Sosa and
Emily Petersen scored three goals each for the Mammoths in the victory while classmate
Jessye Salmon made nine saves in the vwin.
Amherst (2-0,1-0) is at Tufts Saturday for a 1 p.m. start.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths got off to a fast start against the Pride, scoring 59 seconds in when senior captain
Sydney Larsen delivered a pass from behind the goal to Sosa in the slot and the first year's quick shot made it 1-0. Springfield tied the game only 23 seconds later, but it would be the Pride's only goal of the first quarter.
* Just eight seconds after the tying goal, Amherst sophomore
Sydney Kang scored off a pass from Sosa. Before the quarter would end, the Mammoths would boost their lead to 4-1 with goals from
Bridget Finley and Petersen. Petersen's goal came on a free position shot which she artfully bounced past Pride goalie Haley Moody.
* Springfield outscored the Mammoths 2-1 in the second 15 minutes and trailed only 5-3 at halftime.
* Amherst outshot its hosts 7-3 in the third quarter, scoring on 5 of those 7 shots. The Mammoths started the third in a player-up situation and cashed in the opportunity when Sosa converted a pass from Kang into an quick score. Petersen then scored off another Larsen feed and Sosa scored her third goal of the game 59 seconds later off a pass from Sofia Gutman that made it 8-3 with 9:04 remaining in the stanza.
* Unassisted goals from
Elizabeth Rose, Gutmann,
Anna Whitworth and
Mary Gum gave the Mammoths an insurmountable 12-3 lead with 4:34 remaining in the game.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Springfield outshot the Mammoths in the game, 26-24. The Pride won 11 of 20 draw controls in the game.
* Amherst had 10 groundballs in the win to 7 for the Pride.
* Amherst had 9 caused turnovers in the game, 2 each from
Brynn Korpi and
Colleen Mooney.
* Korpi also led Amherst with 2 groundballs. Mooney and
Rachel Rogers led the team with 3 draw controls each.
