MEDFORD, Mass. --
Emily Petersen scored four goals Saturday but it wasn't enough as the #24 Amherst College women's lacrosse team dropped a 14-9 decision to #2 Tufts University at the Jumbos' Bello Field.
Amherst fell to 2-1 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. The Mammoths will host Ithaca College Wednesday at Pratt-Lehrmann Field. Game time is 1 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst held a 2-0 lead early in the opening quarter as
Bridget Finley scored off a feed from
Fiona Jones 3:31 into the contest and Petersen scored her first off a pass from
Clara Sosa less than two minutes later. Amherst went up 3-1 57 seconds into the second quarter when Sosa scored an unassisted tally.
* Tufts reeled off three straight tallies for a 4-3 lead, but goals by
Sofia Guttmann and Petersen from
Kate Becker regained the lead for the visitors at 5-4 with 8:21 left in the second quarter.
* The Jumbos scored the final four goals in the second stanza, giving them seven in the period, and had an 8-5 lead over Amherst at the halftime break.
*The Mammoths opened the third quarter with two quick goals that made it an 8-7 game. Petersen scored from
Sydney Kang and Petersen scored from
Sydney Larsen, the latter goal coming in a woman-up situation with 6:34 remaining in the quarter.
* Tufts would score the next three goals however to make it 11-7 and then outscored the Mammoths 3-2 in the fourth and final quarter to account for the final five-goal margin.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Petersen had four goals and had three draw controls for Amherst, while Finley finished with two goals.
Colleen Mooney controlled nine draws. The Mammoths split halves in goal with
Jessye Salmon starting and making four saves and
Caroline Stole stopping seven shots in the second half.
* The two teams finished the game even on shots at 27 each. Amherst finished the game with a 14-9 advantage in ground balls. Stole led the way with 4 while Petersen gathered in 3.
