AMHERST, Mass. -- The first-year class of the #23-ranked Amherst College women's lacrosse team showed off its collective talent Thursday, scoring 17 of the Mammoths' 21 goals en route to a 21-13 victory over #11 Ithaca at Pratt Field at Lehrmann Stadium.
It was the most goals scored by the Mammoths in a single-game since they scored 21 in a victory over Babson on April 17, 2019.
Amherst improved to 3-1 on the season. The Mammoths host Bates Saturday at 12 p.m. in a conference match-up at Pratt-Lehrmann.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst took a quick 2-0 lead in the first quarter when
Bridget Finley scored a free-position goal 49 seconds into the contest. Just 1:24 later it was 2-0 as
Sydney Kang scored off a pass from
Clara Sosa. Ithaca rallied to tie the game 2-2 and neither team led by more than one until
Emily Petersen scored a man-up goal with 1:19 remaining that gave the Mammoths a 6-4 lead.
* The second quarter was a much tighter affair, with each team scoring two goals. Petersen and Finley scored the Mammoth goals, which allowed them to go into the half up by one, 8-7.
* It was the third quarter when Amherst really took off, scoring eight times in the 15-minute frame. With the scored tied 11-11, the Mammoths ran a string of five goals off to build a 16-11 lead. Finley gave Amherst the lead for good at 12-11 when she scored off a
Sofia Guttmann assist with 6:19 remaining in the quarter. Only 44 seconds later it was 13-11 as Sosa scored off a feed from classmate
Kate Becker. With 5:03 left it was Petersen scoring on a free-position shot, which she tucked nicely into the bottom left corner. Only 21 seconds later it was 16-11 on a goal by senior
Sydney Larsen.
* The Mammoths led 16-12 at the end of three, but outscored the Bombers 5-1 over the final 15 minutes to take home the victory.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Sosa finished with a team-high 7 points (4 goals, 3 assists). Petersen and Finley each had 5 goals and 1 assist for 6 points, while Guttmann had 3 goals and 1 assist and Larsen 1 goal and 4 assists.
* The Mammoths outshot Ithaca 36-25 in the game, and collected 15 groundballs to the Bombers 8.
* The Mammoths were a perfect 16 for 16 on clear attempts. Ithaca had 11 turnovers, nine of which were caused by the Mammoths.

Rachel Rogers had 2 groundballs and 2 caused turnovers in the win.
Caroline Stole had six saves in goal for Amherst.
