AMHERST, Mass. -- First-year
Sofia Guttmann scored 5 goals Saturday while classmate
Emily Petersen notched 2 goals and 2 assists as the #23 Amherst College women's lacrosse team clipped conference rival Bates, 12-8, at Pratt Field at Lehrmann Stadium.
Leading 5-4 at the halftime break, the Mammoths came out of the break to score the first four goals of the third quarter. That outburst was ultimately the deciding factor in a tight, well-played contest. Amherst improved to 4-1 on the season overall, and 2-1 in NESCAC play. Bates fell to 4-4 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* As mentioned, it was a tight 5-4 Amherst lead at halftime.
Brynn Korpi's unassisted goal with 31 seconds left in the half gave the Mammoths lead for good.
* Then, just 2:32 into the third quarter, first-year attack
Bridget Finley was awarded a free-position shot and converted for a two-goal advantage. Guttmann took over after that, scoring the next three Amherst goals in a 5:35 span to take a 6-4 lead and turn it into a 9-4 lead with 6:17 left in the period.
* The Bobcats were far from finished, as they scored twice to make it 9-6 before Mammoth
Clara Sosa scored off a Petersen feed with 26 seconds remaining in the stanza for a 10-6 lead.
* Petersen scored again 1:21 into the final frame for an 11-6 edge and then the Mammoths defense took over as the likes of
Grace Wyckoff,
Rachel Rogers,
Colleen Mooney,
Brynn Korpi,
Caitlin Hoffman and goalkeeper
Caroline Stole put the clamps on the Bobcats' comeback efforts for the next 7:38. With 6 minutes to go Guttmann scored her and the team's final goal for a 12-6 lead. Two late Bates goals had no impact.
