#15 Mammoths open season with come-from-behind 15-10 win at Hamilton

CLINTON, NY -- A seven-goal run over the second and third quarters Saturday allowed the #15-ranked Amherst College men's lacrosse team to post a come-from-behind 15-10 win at Hamilton in its 2023 season opener. 

Amherst is 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference.. The Mammoths host Tufts Saturday, March 18th for its 2023 home opener on Pratt Field at Lehrmann Stadium.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Down 6-4 late in the second period, Amherst rallied to tie things at 6-all before the break  Tanyr Krummenacher scored off a feed from Bob Gross to make it 6-5 with 7:34 remaining, and Matt Adams tallied an unassisted goal with 4:06 left to tie the score.

* Attack Brock Gonzalez opened the third quarter with two unassisted goals spaced 40 seconds apart to give the mammoths an 8-6 lead. Just 39 seconds after the second Gonzalez tally, Bayard DeMallie scored off a feed from Matt Adams for a three-goal Amherst advantage. 

* A Jake Bennett and Gonzalez added unassisted goals, the latter coming with 10:06 left in the third stanza for an 11-6 Mammoth lead. 

* The Continentals scored twice at the end of the third to make it 11-8, but Amherst opened the fourth quarter with four straihgt goals to build a commanding 15-8 lead.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Amherst held a critical 20-9 advantage in face-off wins. Face-off specialist Nicholas Kopp won 18 of the 27 he took in the contest, 

* Mitch Likins opened his season in the cage strong, finishing with 18 saves in the victory.

* Gonzalez and Krummenacher paced the Mammoths' attack, each scoring 4 goals and adding one assist. Bennett had 2 goals and 2 assists while Adams scored 2 goals and added one helper. DeMallie scored twice in the win.
