Emily Petersen scored five goals and classmate
Bridget Finley added three more Tuesday night as the #18-ranked Amherst College women's lacrosse team rolled to an 16-2 victory over Keene State College Owls on Gooding Field.
It was the fourth consecutive win for the Mammoths, who improved to 6-1 on the season. Keene State fell to 1-7 overall. Amherst will at conference rival Bowdoin College Saturday for a 12 p.m. contest in Brunswick, Me.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths scored seven unanswered goals in the first quarter Tuesday and never looked back. Senior
Fiona Jones ignited the outburst with her first goal of the season, unassisted, only 1:13 into the game. Just 18 seconds later, Finley scored her first goal of the game off a pass from
Clara Sosa for a 2-0 lead. With 12:08 remaining in the first stanza, Petersen scored her first goal of the game off a pass from Sosa for a 3-0 lead.
* That was the first of three straight Petersen scores in the quarter. The second one came with 6:12 left off a pass from senior
Sydney Larsen, and the third came off a free-position attempt with 4:52 to go that gave Amherst a 5-0 lead. Only 35 seconds later, sophomore
Elizabeth Rose made it 6-0 with an unassisted tally. Sosa closed out the first-quarter barrage with an unassisted score with 2:01 remaining.
* Keene State scored the only goal of the second quarter, which left Amherst up 7-1 at the halftime break. The Mammoths came out and scored the only six goal of the third 5-minute period, which left them up 13-1 after 45 minutes of action. The Mammoths won all seven draw controls in the quarter and finished with a 20-2 advantage in draw controls. They took the only eight shots of the quarter, scoring on six of those shots, and had a 26-9 advantage over the course of 60 minutes.
