Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

#4 Mammoths edged by Ephs in regular-season finale, 2-1

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Despite outshooting its rivals by a 2-to-1 margin Saturday night, the #4 Amherst College women's hockey team suffered a 2-1 loss to Williams College at Lansing Chapman Rink. 

The Mammoths concluded the regular season with a 21-3-0 overall record and 13-3-0 in the conference. They will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming 2023 NESCAC Tournament and host a quarterfinal game on Saturday, Feb. 25 against Wesleyan University at a time to be announced.

Williams evened its overall record at 11-11-1 with the victory over Amherst. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Only nine seconds after Williams had taken a 1-0 lead late in the first period, Amherst knotted things at 1-all with a goal by Rylee Glennon

* Gretchen Dann started the play by connecting a pass with Kate Pohl, who skated into the Ephs' zone and dropped a pass back for Glennon. The winger skated onto the puck and fired a shot that beat Williams goaltender Erin Pye in the top left corner. 

* The Ephs regained the lead with 1659 left in the second period on a goal by Maddie Tix. Amherst had a power-play opportunity late in the period but did not manage a shot on goal.

* The third period was all Amherst as the Mammoths had a 22-5 shot advantage over the final 20 minutes, including two more power-play chances and a 1:57 span at the end when they had a 6on-5 advantage with Stott pulled off the ice for the extra attacker. 

* Pye saved great opportunities from Leslie Schwartz and Dann late in the second period, then stopped point-blank opportunities by Pohl from the lower slot near the right-face-off circle, and another attempt from Glennon on the doorstep, late in the third period. 

BY THE NUMBERS:

* The Williams keeper finished with 44 saves on 45 shots faced. In addition, her teammates blocked a remarkable 35 Amherst shots in the game. 

* In addition, the Mammoths won 32 of 42 face-offs in the game. Maeve Reynolds won 9 of 12, while Anna Baxter won 14 of 18.
