AMHERST, MA – With four goals scored in the third period, the third-ranked Amherst College Mammoths defeated the Manhattanville College Valiants at Orr Rink Friday night for their annual Pink in the Rink game.
With the win the Mammoths advance to 6-0-1 and the Valiants fall to 3-7-1. The Mammoths next play Sunday, December 31 at 1 pm when they face Oswego State Lakers back at Orr Rink.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* With 18:28 left in the first period, on a power play for Amherst,
Gretchen Dann shot from high right, the puck was blocked, rebounding in front of the Valiants goal, it was found by
Alyssa Xu, who shot but was stopped by Manhattanville goalkeeper Franny Gerardi.
* With 13:15 left
Rylee Glennon brokeaway down the right side of the ice shooting top right. The puck was caught by Gerardi.
* With 7:19 left, on a power play, the Valiants had their first chance at goal. Catrina Chinetti took a shot from the right, shooting just wide of the goal.
* With only 56 seconds left in the first period
Alejandra Ubarri from far right found Janya Park in front of the goal, who netted the puck, putting the Mammoths on the scoreboard.
* In the second period, with 13:28 left,
Maeve Reynolds weaved through three Valiants in front of their goal, backhanding a shot that went just above the goal.
* With 12:24 left Jada Mackinnon shot from right in front of the Mammoth's goal to the right corner, Stott was able to slide and block the shot.
* Only 1:44 into the third period, Ubari, with the puck in front of the Valiant's goal, back passes to Reynolds who shoots to the top right, but was deflected by Gerardi. Reynolds was able to find the rebound, netting the Mammoths' second goal of the night.
* With 13:22 left, Dann, from top left, found
Natalie Fu in front of the Valiant's goal, who was able to push the puck past Gerardi, scoring her first collegiate goal.
* The Valiants tried to return the pressure 8:04 into the period with a point-blank shot from Annie Niedermier, but Stott came in clutch, catching the puck.
* With 7:11 left, after receiving a pass from behind the Manhattanville goal, first-year
Cara Mancini shot to the top right of the goal, netting the Mammoth's fourth goal.
* With 3:29 left
Emily Hohmann skated with the puck around the back of the net, backhanded a shot past Gerardi for her first goal of the season.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst outshot the Valiants 27-5 in the first period, 44-4 in the second, and 18-8 in the third.
* The Mammoths won 33 of the 43 face-offs, with Reynolds winning 15 and Park 11.
* Manhattanville was whistled for 4 penalties, the Mammoths' 2.
