Ducks defeat Mammoths, 81-62, in Stevens Holiday Tournament semifinal

HOBOKEN, N.J. – First-year forward Xander Singh tallied 16 points and 6 rebounds for the Ducks as Stevens Institute of Technology defeated the Amherst College men's basketball team by an 81-62 margin in the semifinals of the Stevens Holiday Tournament on Friday afternoon at Canavan Arena. 

Stevens (8-2) will face Gettysburg in tomorrow's championship game, while the Mammoths (7-4) will battle WPI, ranked 16th in the nation in the latest D3hoops.com poll, in the third-place game at 1 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Early baskets from Will Scherer and Bobby Sommers had the score tied at 4-4, but the Ducks followed with 11 straight points to kick off a 19-2 run, taking a 17-point lead when Kyle Maddison converted a jumper after a steal from Conor Coffey.

* The Ducks pushed their lead over 20 points in the first half when a pair of free throws from Mike Goodall put Stevens up, 31-10, with 5:39 to play before halftime. The Mammoths answered with a 13-3 run of their own with Scherer scoring six points and Sommers adding five to cut the Stevens lead to 11 before a Matt Leming three had the Ducks up, 37-23, at halftime.

* Stevens held a double-digit lead throughout the second half, stretching the lead to as many as 25 points before the Mammoths scored the last five points of the game to cut the lead to 19 at the final buzzer.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* The Mammoths struggled shooting, making a season-low 36.2 percent (25-of-69) of field goals, while the Ducks shot 43.3 percent (26-of-60). Stevens also held the advantage from deep with over twice as many three-pointers as Amherst. The Ducks shot 38.5 percent (10-of-26) from beyond the arc while the Mammoths shot 30.8 percent (4-of-13).

* The Mammoths held a 46-37 advantage in rebounding as Scherer tallied his sixth double-double this season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

* First-year Charlie Randall led three Mammoths in double figures with 13 points. Helmke added 11 points on 4-of-6 field-goal shooting.

* Singh led all scorers with 16 points for the Ducks while Stephen Braunstein scored 13 points and Maddison added 12 points off the bench.
