AMHERST, Mass. – A pair of third-period goals lifted SUNY Geneseo to a 4-2 win over the Amherst College men's ice hockey team on Saturday afternoon at Orr Rink.
The Knights, ranked fifth in the nation in the latest USCHO Division III poll, improved to 8-2 this season while the Mammoths fell to 1-2.
The Mammoths are back in action tomorrow (Nov. 26), visiting Babson for a 3 p.m. clash.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Knights took advantage of a power play to get on the scoreboard early in the second period when junior winger Cooper Fensterstock went top shelf from the left circle to give Geneseo the lead.
* The Mammoths leveled the score three minutes later. The puck took a couple of deflections on a pass from behind the net, finding junior center
Matt Toporowski alone in the slot, where he took a shot to score his first goal of the season.
* Amherst took the lead before the midway point of the second. As the Knights were trying to clear the puck from their defensive zone, senior winger
Ryan Tucker got to the puck near the point and fired a one-timer to score his third goal this week and give the Mammoths a 2-1 lead.
* Fensterstock scored again before the second period was over to even the score at 2-2, shooting a one-timer from the slot after a pass from senior center Mitch Machlitt.
* The Knights reclaimed the lead with the goal the proved to be the game-winner coming 4:33 into the third period. First-year winger Luke Panchisin picked off a pass and dished to senior center Greg Koutsomitis, who delivered a wrister from close range for his first goal of the season.
* Junior winger Stefan Miklakos gave the Knights an insurance goal at the 13:01 mark of the final frame. First-year defender Sterling Wolters sent a long pass from his own goal line that found Miklakos behind the defense for a breakaway that led to the winger's fourth goal of the season.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* The Mammoths held a 31-22 advantage in shots on goal but first-year netminder Jacob Torgner made 29 saves for the Knights. Senior
Alex Wisco stopped 18 shots at the other end for Amherst.
* The Knights went 36-28 at the faceoff dot with graduate center Tyson Gilmour winning 14 draws for Geneseo.
* All three penalties in the game came in the first period. The Knights successfully killed their only penalty, while the Mammoths went 1-for-2 on the penalty kill.
