Mammoths win SUNY-Morrisville Tip-Off Tournament with 75-44 decision over Misericordia

MORRISVILLE, NY -- Four players scored in double figures Saturday as the Amherst College women's basketball team rolled past Misericordia in the championship game of the the SUNY-Morrisville Tip-Off Tournament. 

Laura Mendell scored 12 points, Annie McCarthy netted 11 and Alix Stuart and Reeya Patel contributed 10 points each for the Mammoths, who improved to 3-0 with the win. Amherst is back in action Tuesday for a 5 p.m. start at home vs. Albertus Magnus. 

Misericordia fell to 3-2 on the season. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst held a 12-9 lead mid-way through the opening stanza before a 12-4 run produced a double-digit lead by the end of the first quarter. A Stuart turned around jumper in the paint got the Mammoth run started. Mendell then hit a big three-pointer for a 17-11 lead. Sylvia Liddle finished a possession with an easy lay-up, and Maya Cwalina got to the free throw line and made both to make it 21-13 before McCarthy knocked down a three-ball from the left elbow with 15 seconds remaining in the first for a 2413 advantage. 

* Amherst was very efficient shooting from the floor over the first quarter, hitting 55.6 percent (10 of 18) of their shots while sinking 4 of 6 (66.7 percent) of its three-point attempts. 

* Liddle put the second quarter in motion with another lay-up off a Patel feed for a 26-13 advantage. After a three-ball from Misericordia's Alyssa Bondi sliced the Amherst lead to 10, the Mammoths went on a 10-0 run over the next 4:15 to build a commanding 20-point lead. 

* Cwalina had a nice lay-up off a Kori Barach pass to start the run. Patel then grabbed a defensive rebound, sprinted up the court an set up Mendell for another three-point look, which the sophomore was more than happy to knock down. A Patel steal then led to another lay-up from Liddle, this one in transition, for a 33-16 lead. McCarthy capped the run with a trey and a 20-point lead just minutes before halftime. 

BY THE NUMBERS:

* The Mammoths shot 46.2 percent (30 of 65) from the floor for the game and made 36.8 (7 of 19) of their three-point attempts.

* Amherst had a 34-24 advantage n the glass, and only 7 turnovers in the game compared to 17 for Misericordia. 

* The Mammoths controlled the paint to a tune of 42 points there to 16 for their opponent. 

* Mendell added a team-high 8 rebounds ot her 12-point night. Patel led the team with 8 asists to go with her 10 points, while Liddle had  8 points and 4 assist in the win.
