WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior midfielder
Declan Sung scored in overtime to lift the Amherst College men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Stevens Institute of Technology in the round of 32 of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium on the campus of WPI.
The NESCAC champion Mammoths improved to 15-2-3 with their sixth straight win and are unbeaten in their last 10 games as Amherst advances to the round of 16 for the 13th straight season. The MAC Freedom champion Ducks concluded their season at 11-3-6.
The Mammoths will face the winner of the match between Occidental and Trinity (Texas) in the round of 16 on Saturday (Nov. 18) at a time and site to be determined.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths had the better of the chances throughout the game but all were stopped by Stevens goalie Justin Cross, who made 10 saves in the 90 minutes of regulation.
* The Ducks put only two shots on goal to test Amherst goalie
Max Landa and both came within a minute of each other in the 76th minute of the game. Sophomore midfielder Brian Babovic sent in a chip shot from 40 yards out that Landa leaped to parry away. On the ensuing corner kick, Amherst senior
Ada Okorogheye headed the ball clear of the box where Babovic again sent a long shot from 25 yards out that Landa again leaped to save.
* One of Amherst's best chances came with just over a minute to play in regulation when first-year forward
Mohammed Nuhu sent a corner kick to senior midfielder
Wyatt McCarthy who flicked a looping shot on goal that was nabbed by Cross just before it could sneak in under the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.
* The game-winner came in the 96th minute on a play that Sung began with a throw-in. After the ball bounced around in traffic in the box, McCarthy settled and found Sung, who struck for his third goal of the season.
* The Ducks had a couple of chances in the overtime periods but were unable to put a shot on goal.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* The Mammoths held a 25-7 advantage in shots and led 13-2 in shots on goal. Landa's two saves earned him his sixth clean sheet of the season, while Cross stopped a career-high 12 shots for the Ducks.
* The Mammoths held a 12-3 advantage in corner kicks.
