AMHERST, Mass. -- A late goal from
Justine Liguori was not enough Tuesday night as the #15th-ranked Amherst College field team concluded its regular season with a 2-1 loss to Trinity College on Hill Field.
The Mammoths finished the regular season 9-6 overall and 5-5 in conference play. They will play in a NESCAC Tournament quarterfinal Saturday and a site and time to be determined. The Bantams improved to 9-6 overall, 4-6 in the NESCAC.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The first quarter was scoreless as each team played strong defense in the middle of the field, with the Mammoths taking two shots and Trinity having just one.
* Amherst held a 4-1 advantage in shots over the course of the second stanza, but it would Trinity going up 1-0 with 5:39 remaining in the quarter. On the second of back-to-back penalty corners, Jackie Frank received a pass, wheeled to her right as she dribbled closer to the goal at the right of the circle, and fired a shot back to her left that found its way through for the lead.
* Just 2:47 into the third quarter, Amherst found itself down 2-0 when Frank drove a ball into the circle off a restart that glanced off a Mammoth stick right to Katrina Winfield, who turned on goal to find herself 1 v. 1 with Mammoth keeper Sarah Nidus. Nidus made a gallant effort to rush out and close down the angle, but Winfield skillfully slid a shot under her for the two-goal lead.
* The Mammoths turned up the pressure after that. outshooting Trinity 8-1 over the remaining time in the game. With 9:52 left,
Kate Smith had a shot off a corner that Trinity goalkeeper Olivia McMichael turned aside with her right pad. The Mammoths had back-to-back scoring chances off a penalty corner with 2:22 left in the quarter. Smith inserted the ball to
Anna Aiello and
Muffie Mazambani passed up the shot, instead siding a pass forward to
Sam Maynard, who was alone in the middle of the circle. McMichael raced out to smother Maynard's shot, but the ball ricocheted back to Mazambani, who unleashed a shot destined for the goal, but it deflected off a Trinity defender and out of play.
* With 7:52 left in the game, off another penalty corner opportunity,
Kat Mason ended up with the ball on the right side and fired a shot that was blocked by a Bantam defender. The ball bounced to Mazambani, who took a quick wrist shot that McMichael got a piece of. The rebound went to the left to Liguori, who fired a shot just wide of the goal.
* The Mammoths finally got on the board when Liguori converted a penalty stroke with just 1:16 remaining, but they could not get off another shot in the game as Trinity emerged victorious, 2-1.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst finished with a 14-4 edge in shots and a 6-3 advantage in penalty corners.
* McMichael finished with 8 saves for the Bantams. Nidus and
Grace Puchalski did not make a save for the Mammoths.
