Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

#5 Mammoths edge Trinity 2-1 for 9th Straight Victory

AMHERST, Mass. -- Goals from Mary Thompson and Emily Hohmann, backed 14 saves from Natalie Stott as the #5-ranked Amherst College women's hockey team edged Trinity 2-1 Friday night at Orr Rink.

It was the ninth straight victory for the Mammoths as they improved to 10-1-0 overall and 4-1-0 in conference play. Trinity 4-6-0 overall and 0-5-0 in the NESCAC. The two tams are back at it Saturday at Orr for a 3 p.m. puck drop.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Mary Thompson put the Mammoths up 1-0 with 5:27 left in the first period. Williams senior captain and defenseman Leslie Schwartz set up the goal with a great effort, poking the puck away from an onrushing Trinity forward just inside the Amherst blue line, then skating by another Bantam as she raced down the right side boards, dashing into Trinity's zone before finding Thompson with a pinpoint pass. Thompson skated into the high slot and took a blistering wrist shot that beat Bantam goalie Hannah Leclair over the left shoulder and into the top shelf.

* The Bantams were assessed four penalties in the second period, the fourth creating a 5-on-3 power play for Amherst, and the Mammoths were able to take advantage with a goal by Hohmann that have them a 2-0 lead. Kate Pohl gained control of the puck deep in the Bantam zone and slid it off to linemate Carley Daly, who circled around the goal right to left, into the left circle and then fired a pass to the right point. Hohmann delivered a slapshot that defeated Leclair at the lower left-corner of the goal.

* Trinity made a game of it 1:16 into the third period on its own power-play goal coming from Jenny Guider. The could not find the equalizer over the next 18:44 thanks in part to some great forechecking work by the Mammoths and some fine work by Stott and company in the defensive zone. Kelsey Stewart made one such play with 6:04 remaining, breaking up a 2-on-1 Bantam effort with a poke check.

* With 2:37 remaining, Trinity's Hannah Feinberg got off a strong wrist shot from the left circle that Stott controlled. With 1:36 to go, Thompson, Jayna Park and Rylee Glennon possessed the puck for 25 seconds in the Bantam zone, taking valuable seconds off the clock.

* With 26 seconds remaining Trinity took a timeout and set up for a face-off from the right circle of the Amherst zone. Claudia Capone got off a shot that was blocked, and Martina Exnerova picked up the loose puck and fired a close-range shot from the lower right circle that Stott put a blocker on to push aside. With 10 seconds left, Mammoth Maeve Reynolds won a face-off in her defensive zone and cleared the puck down the ice as the clock ran out.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Amherst finished with a 24-15 advantage in shots. The Mammoths had a 30-19 edge in face-offs won, with Anna Baxter winning 10 of the 14 she drew.
