AMHERST, Mass. – Bantams senior swingman C.J. Redd scored 20 points to lead Trinity College to a national 71-50 win over the Amherst College men's basketball team in NESCAC action on Saturday afternoon at LeFrak Gymnasium.
The Bantams improved to 15-5 overall and 3-3 in NESCAC play, while the Mammoths dropped to 8-12 overall and 3-4 in conference play.
The Mammoths are back in action on Friday (Feb. 3), hosting Connecticut College for another NESCAC clash at 7 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Both offenses were slow to get going and the Mammoths took an early lead as sophomore center
Will Scherer scored a putback layup to put Amherst up, 4-3, five minutes into the game.
* The Bantams followed with a 12-0 run and maintained the lead for the rest of the game. Sophomore guard Will Dorion hit a jumper to give Trinity a 15-4 lead with 7:12 on the clock in the first half before sophomore guard
Bobby Sommers hit a three for the Mammoths to break the run.
* Junior forward Gilbert Otoo sunk a three for the Bantams in the final minute of the first half to give Trinity a 32-16 halftime lead.
* Trinity's lead stayed in the teens for most of the second half. An Otoo jumper gave the Bantams a 42-22 lead with 14:48 on the clock but the Mammoths followed with a basket from junior forward
Dan Schlakman and a traditional three-point play from sophomore forward
Ryker Vance to cut the lead to 15.
* The Bantams used a 7-0 spurt in the final three minutes to ice the game and secure the victory.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Redd scored 15 of his game-high 20 points in the second half. He was joined in double figures by Otoo's 11 points and 10 points from first-year swingman Henry Vetter.
* Vance led the Mammoths with a career-high 14 points and 8 rebounds, shooting 5-of-7 from the floor.
* Trinity held the edge in a slow shooting day for both teams. The Bantams shot 34 percent (21-of-61) from the floor, their lowest field-goal percentage of the season, yet held the Mammoths to just 29 percent (16-of-55) shooting. The Bantams shot 38 percent (9-of-24) from beyond the arc while the Mammoths went 26 percent (5-of-19).
* The Bantams had a 46-42 edge in rebounds, led by eight boards from junior Ben Callahan-Gold.
