Hamilton tops Mammoths, 78-49

CLINTON, N.Y. -- Connor Rood scored a game-high 17 points Saturday as the Hamilton Continentals pulled away from the Amherst College men's basketball team to post a 78-49 victory.

The Mammoths fell to 7-11 overall, 2-3 in the conference while Hamilton improved to 11-7 overall, 3-2 in NESCAC play. Amherst is back in action Monday for a 7 p.m. tip-off at Westfield State.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The game was a back-and-forth affair from the start, with 7 lead changes and 5 ties in the first half alone. Some sharpshooting from the Mammoths gave them a four-point lead just five minutes into the first half after Canin Reynolds hit a three-pointer from the top of the key, followed by Noah Helmke's long two-point jumper and finally another trey from Reynolds off the right wing that made it 15-11.

* Amherst took a 21-19 lead when C.J. Mitchell knocked down a three-pointer from the right elbow, but a 9-0 Hamilton run to put the Mammoths in a seven-point deficit with 7:56 remaining. Amherst countered with a 7-0 run of its own to tie things back up 28-28. Mohammed Alausa knocked down a pair of free throws to get the run started, then grabbed a defensive rebound in his own end that led to a Bobby Summer lay-up. A defensive rebound by Helmke led to a Dan Schlakman bucket that tied the game.

* The Mammoths ended up down three at the half, 34-31, after Reynolds's three-point heave clanged off the rim at the buzzer. Both teams shot over the 40 percent mark in the opening 20 minutes, but Hamilton held a 20-12 edge on the glass.

* Hamilton opened the second half with a 22-5 run over the first nine minutes of the second stanza to pull away for the 78-49 victory.
