AMHERST, Mass. -- Five players had six kills or more Friday night to help the Amherst College volleyball team to a sweep of defending NESCAC champion Bowdoin, 25-14, 25-21, 25-18 in a key conference match-up played in the LeFrak Gymnasium.
Sophomore
Kinsey Cronin led the Mammoths with 7 kills, but right behind her with 6 each were
Charlotte Rasmussen,
Sam Underwood,
Ava O'Connor and
Caroline Tilton.
Carly Cooper notched 23 assists in the win.
Amherst improved to 7-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference while Bowdoin fell to 5-5 overall and 2-2 in NESCAC play. The Mammoths are back in action Saturday afternoon at 2 in LeFrak against conference foe Connecticut College.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:
* In the opening set the two teams traded points back and forth for much of the match, but, leading 14-11, the Mammoths closed the set on an 11-3 run to grab the early advantage. A kill by Tilton from Cooper made it 17-12 Amherst. Following a Bowdoin timeout,
Lani Uyeno served the next four Mammoth points, which included one service ace and kills from O'Connor, Rasmussen and
Anaya Thomas and gave the hosts a 21-12 edge en route to the win.
* Set 2 proved to be the most competitive game. The score was tied 9-9 when a Cronin kill regained the lead for Amherst. With Underwood serving, kills by O'Connor and Cronin again made it a 12-9 game. The Polar Bears would not go away, and a kill by Sarah Evans made it a 15-13 game. The Mammoths then put together a four-point run that made that lead 19-13.
Jacqueline Kortekaas set up for kills in the run, and O'Connor threw in a service ace. A late Bowdoin run made it a three-point game again, but a Tilton kill off a Cooper set ended the set 25-21 in favor of the Mammoths.
* In what proved to be the final set, Amherst built an early 12-6 lead and then extended that by with a 7-4 run that made it a 19-10 scored en route to the 25-18 victory.
Katelyn Hamasaki served four key points in a row, including back-to-back service aces that gave the Mammoths a 17-9 lead.
Alexandra Trofort had a big kill in the set as well. Underwood had a kill that put Amherst on the precipice of winning and a Bowdoin service error ended the set and match.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* O'Connor led the defensive effort with a 19-dig performance. Cooper added 15 digs and Hamasaki 13. Cronin added three block assists in the win.
