Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

#11 Amherst defeats Bates in 5th win of the season

LEWISTON, Me. – Amherst top-scorer, Junior Abby Schwartz, netted her sixth goal of the season as the #11 Amherst College women's soccer team overcame the Bates College Bobcats on Saturday on the Russell Street Track and Field soccer pitch.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst dominated the game as soon as it kicked off. Schwartz had her first effort of the game in the seventh minute which went wide to the right of the goalpost. Senior Alexa Juarez then forced Bates goalkeeper, Samantha Bunar, to make her first save of the game less than three minutes after Schwartz's initial effort. In the tenth minute, the Bobcats' defensive resistance eventually broke against Amherst's pressure, and Amherst gained a 1-0 lead. Abby Schwartz was the goalscorer - high on confidence after contributing with a goal and an assist in Amherst's last game versus the Emerson College Lions on Tuesday evening. Schwartz was in the right place at the right time to score the goal off an initial rebound.

* The Mammoths continued to have the upper hand as they searched for another goal. They had several efforts, from Sophomore Carter Hollingsworth, Senior Isabel Stern, and Schwartz again, before they doubled their lead in the 20th minute. Alexa Juarez scored her first goal of the season with a shot from the top of the circle.

* Amherst continued the game as the better side, and Bates failed to have a single shot in the first half of the game. The Bobcats improved in the second half; the home side had an attacking spell between the 55th and 66th-minute mark, forcing Amherst goalkeeper, Junior Mika Fisher, to make two saves. The latter stages of the game continued with Amherst having a handful of scoring opportunities whereas Mammoth defenders were not forced to face much competition from Bobcat forwards.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Amherst now holds a 5-1-0 overall record (2-1-0 in NESCAC) for the season.

*Up next: after winning their second of four successive away games today, the Mammoths will remain in Maine to face Colby College Mules, in another NESCAC contest. The game will take place on Serdjenian Field in Waterville, Maine, on Sunday at 11am.

*The Mammoths took 21 shots (5 on goal); the Bobcats took 4 shots (2 on goal).
