AMHERST, Mass. -- Paced by contributions from
Kinsey Cronin (10 kills),
Caroline Tilton (10 kills) and
Sam Underwood (9 kills), plus a career-high 44 digs from
Lizzie Papalia, the Amherst College volleyball team won the final two sets Saturday afternoon in LeFrak Gymnasium and won a hard-fought NESCAC match over visiting Middlebury, 3-1.
The Mammoths improved to 4-2 overall and stayed unbeaten in conference play at 2-0. Middlebury fell to 4-3, 0-2 in NESCAC play. Up next for Amherst is a match with rival Williams back in LeFrak Friday night at 7.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* In the critical first set, the Mammoths scored the final seven points in a 25-19 victory. A kill by Cronin off a set from
Carly Cooper tied the score, and Cronin and Tilton combined a block to regain the lead for the Mammoths.
Katelyn Hamasaki served the final six points of the match for Amherst, including an ace that made it 22-19. Underwood had two kills late in the run, her final one ending the match in favor of the Mammoths, 25-19.
* The Panthers took the second set by the identical 25-19 score, tying the match 1-1. In the third set, Middlebury took an early 6-3 lead, but a 6-1 Mammoth run made it 9-7 in favor of the home team. A kill from
Charlotte Rasmussen off a Cooper assist began the run, and then Rasmussen took over the serve as Amherst won five more points. Two Cooper kills and a Rasmussen service ace made it 9-7. Middlebury rallied from an 18-12 deficit to tie the set at 20-20, but the Mammoths won five of the final six points. A key block by Cronin followed by a kill from Cronin set up a kill from Tilton as the set ender.
* In the fourth set, the Mammoths built a 13-4 lead and cruised to the 25-16 match-clinching win. Tilton had two service aces in a 7-1 run that gave Amherst that nine-point early lead. Later
Mia Nakamura had back-to-back service aces that made it 24-13, and a kill by Underwood closed out the victory.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Cooper led the Mammoths with 22 assists. Papalia had seen assists to go with her 44 digs. Underwood and Cooper had 18 and 16 digs, respectively.
